There's no form or inspection sheet required for pre-trips. Your company may require them and/or your school may have a certain inspection procedure but the federal DOT boys do not care how you do it. See FMCSR §392.7.

Don't lessen the easiest with the severest of this inspection. This is one of only a few places where you can get out and make money for yourself. You should get into the habit when your done with the pre-trip you're confident that truck is in a safe condition and you're not going to break an item because you didn't check it. You can catch items that are about to break and have them fixed that you know would have cost you a lot of time waiting in the shop to be fixed. You stay on top of your equipment and it will work for you. I've found 2 turbos, 3 driveshafts, and many hoses, connections, and so on.

    RickG and Shyne_E_Star Thank this.

They do it differently here in B.C. , Canada.
You have 45 minutes to do a complete pre trip inside, outside and underneath front to back. You must touch each item and make the correct comments.
(IE: each lugnut has to be checked for tightness) You fail if it takes longer than 45 minutes. They use a 2 page checklist of over 100 to 150 items.

    Shyne_E_Star Thanks this.

That's why we have American standards because we don't have the patients for that.

Yes and in Canada drivers 65 years of age and older must be completely retested . Many fail because they miss something on their pretrip .

I am inclined to think that we have lazy examiners.

The reason we have pre-trips in the first place is for safety, if you can't handle doing something so simple, do not think about getting into this profession.

Well, well, well Mr. Spelling bee winner. I believe you mean patience unless you're a Dr. then you may have patients!
