    -26 yrs old
    -extremely motivated
-clean mvr, no drugs, no felons, no dui/dwi
    -was in college, never finished
-recently obtained class A cdl from a company sponsored school
-i was one of the better drivers in my group
-one month OTR with a trainer
    -planning to get tanker endorsement

I'm planning to quit my company because I realized that the whole reason I went to their school was to obtain my CDL so I can work in the oil fields. I dont want to lose my focus. Perhaps if I stay a couple months it would look good on a resume, but I don't want to waste time, 3 months and it would be winter already. So do u guys think I have a chance of being hired straight out of a cdl mill?

They will be charging you for the school if you leave now.

Sunoco would likely hire you. You would probably have to go through another training period though. As mentioned, you will be billed for whatever your contract is for on the schooling.

The Hazmat is a catch 22. You'll have to do it again once your hired...but I have to believe that getting hired is the important part. I also have to believe that they will hire you quicker if you have hazmat in hand. That way they know that you CAN get one. I just can't see them taking the time to go through the preliminary hiring process on someone that..as far as they know.. may or may NOT be able to get a Hazmat endorsement.

Others may have better advice, but for me, getting hired is the important part. I would just go ahead and get the endorsement, figure that it's a $100 investment that you have to make to improve yourself...and that you'll be making the same investment again after you get hired. Would you pay $200 to get from the job your at, to a job in the oil fields?

Pumpco, frac tech, pinnerengy, baker huges, hillaburation, and a lot of the water hauling companies in West Texas. Don't blame you for not wanting to waste time going OTR. When you can be home every night and make way more money.

If he can make twice as much in oil fields than OTR he will have the money too repay school loan and he won't have to sleep in trucks for 4-6 weeks at time

    Arky Thanks this.

L.B Cal, thank u for understanding. Also thanks for u other guys that responded as well. As far as the repayment goes, thats something that I will just have to repay, it is not a big deal.

Not only that but I know that Sunoco pays a relocation bonus and they have a tuition reimbursement package. I know nothing about it and don't know if he can get it...but if he could...would be that much less. I'm guessing his contract is for $5k+ and Sunoco's tuition reimbursement is $2k, so he would likely have to use the relocation money as well. But...even then...40k/yr to 70k+...my calculator didn't have any problems at all with those numbers..lol.

Hey had I listen to the nay Sayers on here I would more than likely be sitting in some swift truck right now. And anyway I meet two-three people a week who wise up and go the route your going. It's like Arky says 40k v 70k+ no problem with my calculator either.

Training time is invaluable. Don't think you know it all yet because you are just starting to learn. You are not ready to be on your own until the trainer says you are ready. What happens if you don't like the oil fields? Every driver has to spend time finding their niche in the industry. What if you find a great job that requires 1 year OTR experience? You are right back at square one.

The older you get the quicker time flies. One year ain't (forum friendly) smelly excrements anymore.

Recently they have been finding drinking water contaminated with frac water. It might be a job now but it might not be a lifelong career if the activist and gov't puts the brakes on.

Good luck what you do. I just don't feel a driver should rush his first year and absorb everything he can. As a newbie on the road you have fellow truckers to help you out. When you work local and screw up as a newbie you'll never hear the end of it from your co-workers.
