As a new owner op I took the advice of some of you when I had 80 lbs of salad croutons rejected by the receiver. When the dispatcher I had hired found out I had put the goods into storage, he flipped. I gave them 12 free hours of storage on my truck in my sleeper before I put them in storage. They wanted me to deliver them somewhere but didn't know where. The dispatcher said I had no right to put them in storage, since it wasn't my property. I told him I was not a storage company and should charge CH Robinson for the time I stored it. We argued and then he said he would not work for me anymore. I told him he already was not representing me, but the broker instead. He said they could hold my money on the load for this. It is 4500 dollars. Should I be worried about them holding up my money?? Did I do the right thing??
damaged freight question???

you had every right to put it in storage.
They have to give you a timely response on what you need to do with it as well.
You may have to eat the bill for storage, but there's no reason you couldn't put it there and get it out of your bedroom.
Sounds like your "dispatcher" isn't really worth it.Dominick253, cetanediesel and areelius Thank this. -
The storage place was Sugar Shack in Longmont Co. The owner there is an owner op himself. He took it for nothing, knowing if ChRobinson wanted it he could charge then and make some easy money. If not, it was trash. Yes that dispatcher showed me who he was loyal to. I paid him a percentage and he did ok until this issue came up. He had no stake in what happened to the stuff, so he could have taken my side. He is a small home based guy and should tell his trucks whose side he will take when there is a problem.Dominick253 and truckthatpassesyouby Thank this.

you learned that lesson early in your experience. The only one looking out for your well being is YOU and no one else.

Problem is the guy you hired has no right to flip on his boss like that. Number 2 is dot will ding you for having unsecured cargo in the cab so you did right.
areelius Thanks this. -
As I understand it; they cannot hold money if the load was delivered. The damage was due to heat or change of elevation, causing the bags to expand and pressure to build in them. I will bill them as if nothing happened and see what happens.

What does the BOL say on it - if it doesnt note the damage then more than likely it wont be an issue. Even w/ CHR they have never held money over something that small. If it does notate damage on it just call the CHR rep and talk it over real quick and more than likely he/she wont care. It's just part of business.

Why do you have a "dispatcher" ?
areelius Thanks this. -
Exactly, why feed another snake if you are on your own?Dominick253, areelius and Container Hauler Thank this.

That is what I have learned from this. I need to use the loadboards. I havent tried it yet and will no doubt make some errors, but I think they will give me the flexibility I need. I will start a thread about this and let the experienced owner ops teach the right way to do it. Thanks Oscar and SamDominick253 Thanks this.
