    1. I know that when I'm starting out I will have to take an OTR job for a couple of years. I don't think I would have a problem with that it the truck is nice and new enough. Not sure if I would like doing team driving for very long though. So I'm wondering if most of the OTR jobs are teams, or if there are lots of jobs driving solo for fairly new drivers. And how long does it take to gain enough experience to go solo?

    2. I have worked very little in the last 3 years. Tried to start a business but that went nowhere. Only had incomes of about $10K per year. Will that make it hard to get a first trucking job?

    3. I've been thinking about what to take with me on the road. Clothes, laundry detergent, first aid kit, books, music, toothbrush, razor, soap, towel, maybe even camping cooking stuff?, lots of water. I don't have a very complete list yet. Any recommendation of what to bring or not to bring? I assume I can shower and do laundry in most truck stops?

    4. How and where, and how often can I connect to the Internet from the truck? If I bring a laptop, is it easy to find places with WIFI?

    5. How many hours per week are usually spent driving with an OTR job? And how many hours are spent on non-driving work-related activities? I'm trying to get a feel for how much free time I might have to relax, sleep, read, write, browse the Internet, etc.

All this info is in this forum somewhere but I'll try. Just search for CDL school and you'll find companies that train or hire new drivers. Local votech or community college will probably give you a chance at finding work near your home. Plenty of other companies hire from "nearly" anywhere. I work for Central Refrigerated and just finished my first year. It's rough starting out but the longer you drive the better it gets. I jus had a week cover my bills for the month so I can't complain. You'll need copies of your tax returns to prove you were self-employed with most large companies. They like to have a work history of at least 3 years. Truckstop wifi is a coin flip. Flying j and Pilot can be reliable but they cut out some days and sometimes the service is just gone. I'm tempted to sign up for Millenicom... Umm, you're goin to constantly be fine tuning things when you're off but there's 24 hrs in a day and you can only drive 11 so if you can't manage your time don't bother. It's amazing how much down time there is when you're working 60-70 hrs a week!! Think that's about it. Good luck to ya.

That's your decision to run teams or not.
Many good trucking companies with terminals in Denver.
Try to go with a company that has APU's on the trucks.
Will you attend a private CDL school or trucking company CDL school?

System Transport and Prime Inc. have terminals in Denver & so do several other companies.

Will someone create a long topic that has a list of all of these same questions and answers so we can just link to them every few hours when someone asks the same question? Which company hires new people? What should I bring, Will they hire felons? Can I bring my gun? Can I start out local? How much money will I make the first year? etc.

Well, if things are improving in your world after only being on the job for one year, that would not be so bad.

Planning on attending the Sage School in Henderson CO, but would be paying out of pocket, and it is not cheap. I've heard the private schools are better and might open me up to better jobs. Would love to start with a local or regional route, but not sure how easy that is for someone with no experience.

Well, that patience thing is easy to remember when you make good money, easier to forget when you're paying to go to work. What? Paying them to drive their truck?! Yep, welcome to trucking. It's very rare for a person who stays on top of their trip planning and has a good working relationship with their DM (driver manager or dispatcher), but a family emergency or down time for whatever issue are still likely to happen. Even if you're a company guy, you're still likely to be paying for your school loan and the bills don't stop just because you did. Leasing is crazy before you know what you're doing and have a handle on running your business profitably at all times, with money held back for said emergencies! I made it but I never wanna be new at this again, lol!

Those local jobs; if they need a driver & you're available, you're hired. Check Careerbuilder website for those jobs.

Regional, no problem there either. Many companies have regional & new hires can get them. Some of those regional jobs are dedicated or logistics accounts such as a trucking company hauling for Walmart or Lowes. Schneider and Greatwide have lots of those accounts. System Transport has a Western Regional option as do many other companies. Trucking companies websites will show if they have regional options or not. Make a list of companies that offer regional and apply for pre-hires; they will have online applications. System Transport prefers you download an application and Fax it to them.

Indeed website, a good one also. Put in "local driving jobs" Denver, CO or "regional driving jobs" Denver, CO. Play with that website and see what you come up with.
