I am currently in Illinois with an Illinois cdl but in will be moving to California and transferring license very soon. My question is can I go get fingerprinted and start the hazmat waiting process here in Illinois so that by the time I get California I'll get my clearance letter and can just go in and take my hazmat test.....or does my background check/fingerprinting need to be done in CA if I'm going to add the endorsement in Cali? Hope that makes sense.
Thanks!

you will need to do all of it in CA.
-
Off the TSA website
If you have completed a threat assessment before, and you are transferring your HME to another state, you may not have to go through another assessment for the transfer if your new state can issue an HME that expires within 5 years of your last assessment. Check with your new state for their procedures. -
When I switched over from NC to Nevada I was required to take the HM over, perhaps it is a state to state issue.

Check the TSA website for hazmat. I have a TN drivers license, but I'm currently in MI. I was able to do the TSA background check and fingerprints in MI, but had to go to TN to add my endorsements. Not all states share this ability.

You should have put you may not have to go through another assessment in bold. MAY is the key word. CA MAY require it.

All items must be completed in the state you are moving to once you actually reside there I think "not sure" until you get an official address change you can use your current ill cdl and in regards to hazmat you may have to take a second skill testing in cali depends on state law may wanna look into commercial motor vehicle rules for that state I know this is the scenerio I had when I moved
