OK, I see obese individuals in other career fields, they aren't treated like garbage.

Thanks to all who've replied. I have a brand new respect for OTR drivers. I've been around trucks since I was 17 but mostly working on them. My mother and step-father had a hand full of Peterbilts that I took care of. 359's at first then slowly bringing 379's on board as the years went on. The driving I did only consisted of shuttling trailers and local deliveries. Other than that it was greasing, changing fluids and filters, lights, tires, a few old Cat overhauls and so on as I was employed full time elsewhere. Mom retired and sold the trucks so when I decided to try trucking I picked a company that from a distance, looked pretty good. Now that I've seen trucking from the driver's seat, NO THANK YOU. Again, brand new respect for OTR drivers for what you have to deal with every day.

jd6404...i'm not a driver but am contemplating it as a career change if necessary (contractor in Afghanistan untill the party's over)....

but from alot of what i have read on this and other forums....you may have hit the worst company first time out....there are so many companies out there and its like throwing a dart to find one good for starting out....

also i read that the first year can be pretty bad (maybe not as bad as your first experience)...but its all about paying dues and getting used to it all....
trust me I don't look forward to a first year in this business or any business for that matter......

for example i wanted to be a merchant mariner so i went to all the trouble and expense to get my credential and get into the union and guess where i started...as a wiper in the engine room....had to start literally at the bottom....and it would probably have taken 2 to three years to get some ratings that would be worth it financially and career wise....I would still be in that job had it not been for this contracting opportunity in the middle weast.....course I have been deployed for 3 years now and only been home about 3 months....a couple weeks at a time ...but its a job/adventure....

my point in this ramble is...all beginnings dont always start at the top and you can always try another company..if you really want to drive and make a go of it dont let any of those swine win by letting them change your mind....I am sure there are other better companies out there...maybe try some of the bigger outfits....it may be still hard but alot of people seem to make it through the first couple years and do fine.....good luck and thanks for sharing your honest experiences with us.

I can't stress enough that I have a lot of respect for the industry, in fact I really enjoy trucks, trailers and transportation in general. I have had a great career starting as a technician evolving to a mechanical engineer. 9 years of college and training with great pay but it has always been a job. Trucking however is something I have always liked. Do what you love and the money will come, not true. I liked the job but there is no way I'm going to allow people to treat me that way, especially when they assume everyone is an idiot but themselves.

It has went from drivers in the 50s wearing ties and uniforms, making great money, to all that we are hearing. Sad, but it will get worse. As the borders are overrun with individuals that will literally drive for almost nothing, just to be able to live in the US, most won't be able to even get a rotten job.

Hope I am wrong, but integrity, honestly, caring about the job that we do all the time, considering others as we would have someone consider our children, wives, mothers or fathers, and even our brothers and sisters, is a thing for "back in the day." Our low morals are destroying us, and leaving our children and grandchildren with a country that is only a shadow of it's former greatness. All that our forefathers sacrificed and died for is going down the toilet at an incredible rate...We can turn it around, but it will take a huge revival...and soon....

Those mechanics sound like a piece of work.Tell them to come on here,id like to have a few words with them.I can see who rates at that company and that's the mechanics.A shop guy tells me to not call him with problems,id say don't wotrry I wont I want someone that actually works. Then how dare they have you kicked out of the lunch room. They don't like the site of drivers then they need to move not the drivers.Worthless POS mechanics.

Many do recommend small companies because they know you on a personal level which to me is a so what who cares.Their bad safety, bad equipment and in your case all of the above including horrible mechanics.

Once in a while I miss OTR. Driving through some states was AMAZING!
But the crap I had to go through with PAM Transport... SHEESH!
I am not anywhere CLOSE to making good money as a Hot Shot driver, but sleeping in my own bed and being home weekends is #### sweet!

More times then not the cons outweighs the pros.Ive had some bad companies and came home.It sure is a huge weight lifted to be home from a horrible company.
