Hi There, My son (26) is a student Truck Driver has his permit so far and is of the Lgbt Community, and I am worried about how this is going to affect this career he has chosen. He is not flaming in fact he has become so good at hiding it that no one would know unless he told you he was - and yes I told him to keep it to himself, but as a Mom I need to know what he will be dealing with out there... and yes I know that he is very much his own man and will face this on his own but you can't stop me from worring need some assurance here..........Just another Mom

In my four years on the road as a trucker, most LBGT I knew got harassed constantly if they were open about it and it showed they were LBGT. Not all drivers are nice like me and accept ppl for who they are, it can be rough out there. If he is not open he will just have to put up with the other day to day bs truckers have to put up with.

The best bet is for the son to become the best truck driver he can be, while keeping his private life, TOTALLY PRIVATE from everyone he meets in his trucking career. This will lessen his chances of being harassed or possibly assaulted by seriously prejudiced people.

God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!

Several drivers of that community, have posted on here, they had no problems working with Swift. Evidently, the staff of Swift in Phoenix is very accomodating to all.

What the others ahead of me have said, it's best for him to keep his preferences to himself. I know that it goes against the idea of fighting prejudice and bigotry, but the trucking industry can be a cruel place sometimes, and if he is open about it, some are going to treat him badly. If he's good at hiding it as you said, then that would be his best bet for when he is out on the road in the truck.

The question is, "Is he worried about it?" If he isn't then he will do fine..it means he knows how to mix in society, and keep his privacy.

########. Even the notion that he should 'keep his preferences to himself' is disgusting. He should just be who he is however that manifests itself.

There are the ignorant, the idiots and the closed-minded in any profession and among nearly any group of people. That's the world.

The chatter on the CB is rife with ignorance and immaturity. If he's got a clue, he'll learn not to bother with it. (Haven't turned on a CB myself in years.)

I disagree. I do not want to hear about any sexual conduct straight or gay. That's personal and should be kept that way. Even going don't the road I hate anyone that hoots and hollers about someone they see. I would never discuss anything so personal about my wife to another driver. Even if I was not married, I would not go on about what has happened between the two of us. It's just personal and does not belong in the workplace. I do agree that there are some matters that he might find normal that some may conclude he is gay and that's unfortunate. I would suggest, in this industry, that he keep those clues to himself. Of course in this day and age I believe it's wrong but in cases like this it's easier. I'm sure he knows how to conduct himself and he will be fine.

I would agree were that the case, or even the question - but who said anything about discussing sexual conduct?

I want to know why everyone assumes people are going to be nasty to someone who is gay or trans in this business. If your son was going to work at a bank, would you get on a banking forum to see if bankers treat people of a different orientation poorly? How closed minded is it you to think we are all closed minded bigots?

That said your son will be hired to do a job just the same as he would in any other industry, not regale his coworkers with tales of his sexual escapades. That is generally frowned upon regardless of one's orientation. As long as he keeps it on a professional level, there will never be any issues with anyone. After he begins to become better acquainted with his coworkers, and If he feels that the people he works with are accepting enough, he may choose to divulge his orientation to some or all of them. I'm sure he has dealt with these situations many times prior to now, and can tell within a few minutes whether people are homophobic.
