so i found someone that will hire me at 25% of the trip, he is willing to train me on the car hauling part, but he says he doesnt have alot of time for training, about a week. how realistic is it for me to learn the basics & run with it? (1 year experience with CDL)

Hauling cars? I'd continue to look. People get touchy you screw up paint on a car.

i understand MNdriver, if i can squeeze another week of training out of him, i would feel more comfortable. the thing is that its tough to find someone that will hire & train me in hauling cars . i kinda feel i need to jump at this opportunity. i appreciate all the advice!
mje Thanks this. -
what size trailer?

I started about a month ago, got trained for about a week. I too had my cdl gor over a year. I guess it depends on how well your trainer is, and if u follow directions well. Make sure you pay attention to every detail. My first truck is a 7 car hauler, its pretty easy to load/unload.
The work is more physical but the pay is good. -
Are you seeking real advice or looking for someone to tell you what you want to hear? #1 you have only 1 year CDL experience...on what type of equipment?? A 5 axle class 8 rig? or a 10' 2 axle straight truck? 1 year in my opinion, you are still learning to drive. Trying to haul cars on top of that puts you at a real disadvantage. When I was hiring drivers, I would not take an application with less than 3 years driving. #2 This guy is willing to train you to drive one of his trucks? But will only invest a week? A week is nothing? But a lot of this depends on the type of equipment. Are we talking a 8 or more stinger type transport or a 1ton dually? It takes all of about 2 seconds to destroy an automobile on a transport due to inexperience, and you can get seriously hurt in the process. Please provide more info if you are seeking real advice. If all you want is to hear what you want to hear...go for it and have fun.

the trailer holds 7. the title says need advice, so of course im looking for realistic advice. not looking for a fairy tale. can it be done?

just over one year experience with con-way (5 axle)
mje Thanks this. -
I'd say no.
If your always going to be hauling the same type of cars and he's willing to allow for one heck of a learning curve.... I'd still lean towards no.
Ultimately it's up to you. I know you really want to get into it and I also realize your location is causing you issues but just remember if you damage out due to poor or not enough training you'll be outta the game forever. -
thank you, so more than a week training?
mje Thanks this.
