I have a good friend of mine who is a freight broker and he tells me that every day he just has trucks no show, no call. This is not run of the mill cheap stuff either (although I don't know his real rates).

Frankly, if everyone provided top notch service it would be tougher for me to get rates so to all those other guys- keep doing what your doing!!

If you listened to many carrier's you just have to pay more and then you would have no problems. Right. After a few years you learn to ignore most that call you.

Well... I know I'm probably not the norm, but, having been in the Army, and being raised by a cop, I learned from a young age that if you're not an hour early, you're late! Despite what my profile says, I've been doing this 14 years now... been late to a receiver ONE time (fricking blizzard!). I HAVE been held up for several hours past my appt time by both shippers and receivers, more times than I can count... sooooo... from MY perspective, the problem does NOT lie within! The last time I looked, I had hauled over 2000 loads... 1 late arrival (for weather), in all that time hardly makes for M/C undependabilty complaints... I can't speak for anyone other than myself, but my general sense impression is that the vast majority of OPs out there think and operate the same way I do... if you're getting crappy service, I'm guessing underpaid, overworked company drivers for mega carriers MAY be the source of your angst... just a theory, mind you... as a company driver, just starting out way back when, I still performed the same as I do today (I'm just a bit more conservative on my fuel usage... LOL!)

I think if you get the rate confirmation that should be it. I mean it's not a legal contract like a BOL but It almost should be. They should be dead sure when they send it that you are locked in on the load. Causes a whole bunch of bs and confusion for everyone. I think it blows the broker's credibility too.

You get about the same mix of good and bad from large or small or one pony shows. At least with the larger company's they can tell you where the truck is. Nothing more annoying than a single O/O not calling/answering while everyone is needing to know where he is. The bad ones stick in your mind more than the good ones do.

Aside from the crooked ones shopping for a cheaper truck, it could have been legit. I know a lot of the chicken loads we haul are posted up to brokers for bids by the shipper. If a broker was shopping the load before locking it in, there could have been a delay on the shipper side or the broker may have missed it. I'll wait about 15-20 minutes before I call and ask what's up. The ones worth doing business with will usually come clean about it.
