I like the bridge idea, especially one where you can climb up between the beams, right under the concrete deck. I seen that done on one of those storm chaser shows.
-
Just hire on with swift. You will be used to panic situations!

-
It is really not a good idea. I am a trained weather spotter and we have seen footage of the storm chasers who have gotten caught out and ran for the beams. A couple of them were badly beaten up and required medical treatment. One was sucked out and thrown into a field. It is not the one that is shown on tv for the lucky ones that made it.
The area under a bridge underpass acts like a vacumn. If the tornado were to pass directly above it intensifies the amount of the vacumn. -
But isn't that better then simply laying in a ditch, where God knows what could get dropped on top of you?
-
Believe it or not, they do recommend the ditch. It is where I would go. -
I dunno. It just seems to me your safer up under a bridge between 2 big I-beams, with possibly some bracing to grab hold of, than simply laying in a ditch somewhere. You'd definetly be protected from debris coming from overhead. And as for getting sucked out from under it, I wish there were a way one could test that theory.
-
I hope to never test it. However, when I am home and the alert goes out. I go out the door to look for tornados. Makes you wonder about my sanity. -
Well what I meant was, in Florida there is a thing that you stand in, grab hold of a pole, and they turn on a big fan which produces a 60 mph wind, which I didn't think was much at all.
-
If I had enough advanced warning, Iwant the truck in the parking lot at a truck stop parked between other trucks in order to break the intensity of the wind before it reaches my truck. I would then take cover in the truckstop away from the windows. If I came up on a tornado by surprise, I would probably park under a bridge and stay in the truck. I dont think I want to leave the truck because of hail and wind blown debris. A ditch might be safer but Im not totally convinced of that. I read in the accident report that about 6 trucks were flipped over on I-40 in Jackson TN during last week's tornadoes. In either situation Im going to pray.
