Hi Everyone,
I know trucks normally use starter batts because of the high CCA requirements. The problem is they don't hold up well to "hotel" loads and get damaged if regularly drained below 50%. So i was wondering, how many CCA do you need to start a Detroit s60 in the winter? Is that the only reason we don't all by AGM batts which handle hotel loads much better? There are some deep cycle AGM's out there with decent CCA and im wondering if they would be good enough to still get it started. Kevin Rutherford (the xm radio guy) talked about getting 3 AGM, and one "booster battery" but I have never seen the booster batt sold.
Unfortunately I cant find any specs on the batts that are int here now. They are an off brand called "energy Power"
Thanks

I run (4) ThermoKing EON AGM regular group 31 batteries.
I got tired of exide batteries that always seem to leak.
I've not had any issues with hot/cold/discharge or anything, but they are not "Deep Cycle" per say.
They come with a 4yr full replacement warranty (not pro-rated).
Seems they are re-branded Odyssey from looking at the case/specs and design.
Spec's are very impressive (per battery):
CCA ....................................................................... 1150
HCA ........................................................................1545
MCA .......................................................................1370
Cost? Over $400 each...that's a show stopper in most cases.
AGM batteries are not cheap.
My other option (still on the table) is to isolate to another set of (4) batteries.
I'd install them into the steps on the passenger side and use those for the sleeper yet keep
the main batteries isolated (much like in an RV)....Just haven't had the need yet to do that.. -
Thanks for the info, I saw several AGM with similar specs. Ive seen traditional starter batts that are group 31 with less CCA. So i guess, How much CCA do you need and is that the only factor in starting?
The isolating with 2 batt banks would be ideal, but that adds a significant amount of weight -
Exide just filled chapter 11 bankruptcy, so be cautious. They might not be around to honor the warranty.
