Hi,
Im all about keeping my tires perfectly inflated. the auto air system on my trailer lets air out as the tiers get hot in the sun to maintain a perfect pressure and ad when it gets cold. Is there a reason I never see auto air on the tractor? Id love to have that kind of reliability on my tractor to, but i don't know any company that sells a system. Is it DOT iligal or something?
Id actually love to be able to manually adjust the pressure based on each loads weight, but i have never seen inflation systems that allow that. If any one makes a system where i can dial in a new psi every time i load and empty I will be the first to buy it. We all run over inflated empty an slightly under at max weight. It would be nice to switch to a lower psi for deadhead without manually going to each tire and letting air out.
If i fabricated an auto air system myself, would it be legal to put it on the tractor?
Thanks

Ive seen the auto inflation system on two trucks, so it is sold. I have no clue by what manufacturer.
Richter Thanks this. -
Thanks, i'll have to find it. i don't get why they arn't on almost all trucks. The value has been proven on the trailers, why not apply to 10/6 more wheels.

TMPS is available on Volvo.

the system i have on my trailer allows me to make adjustments to my air pressure setting. but it doesn't bleed any off when the tires get hot so its a cold setting only. but will maintain cold psi if you get a leak. i don't think you see the system on tractors because the Axel shafts on the drives don't allow the system to be installed.

I am thinking that Eaton has a system for Trailers and there is a system out there for the tractor, but I can't remember the name of the company. The trailer one I think has a different hub and stub system that has to be swapped out with the old one, the tractor one actually rides outside the tire itself and can be damaged by road debris.

The problem with the tractor is the hose has to be mounted outside the wheel, very cumbersome to say the least. The trailer axles are hollow, which is why the piping can be internal. I have seen one or two systems but not in widespread use. If you want to, use nitrogen which is not supposed to leak through the tire membrane, which will help maintain pressure, like used in racing and aircraft.

yea, but you cant get nitrogen ont he road easily if you have a blow out. It also wont keep your supper single that has a small puncture filled until you can safely get off the road. Thats my main concern. In my experience supper singles rarely blow out but can get punctured. If you can keep it inflated you dont loose a rim to.

Once your tires are filled with nitrogen, you can refill with regular air, you just slowly lose the benefit of nitrogen with the more air you put in. As for the air inflation systems, the drive axles and steer axles have solid hubs which do not allow air to be run through the hub like in a trailer(trailer and tag axles are hollow on the inside, and can work as air tanks). Drive Air is one solution, or the truck I'm currently driving has Halo.( http://www.aperiatech.com/ ) I've only been in this truck for a week now, so I have no idea how well it really works, but these are the only inflation systems i've heard of that work on drives
Richter Thanks this.
