Hi fellow Canadian truckers,
I have spent quite a few weeks and read this thread from the beginning, earlier this year. Got all excited about the opportunities but then chickened out from taking the leap. I am looking for some advice from the seasoned pros as to what my best plan of attack would be for starting a new career in the oilfield industry. Any advice from the brave drivers who moved to the Alberta from out of province, like what to do first and what mistakes to avoid? My situation is that I have been driving team with my hubby for more than 13 years, it has always been long haul over the road. We make a decent living but would like to get out of the long haul gig, also we are located in Toronto and are looking for a more rural lifestyle.
- Wanting advice on what will be the best region to move to for long term prospects and relocation, Edmonton, Red Deer, etc?
- Do we get our oil tickets once we move out there or can we start the process on line first, what is the best reputable source for getting the tickets?
- Are placement agencies worthwhile to try out or is it best to just knock on the big companies doors?
- We will be in Calgary for a few days next week, we would like to drive to Red Deer, Edmonton and Lloydminster, what would be a good plan for researching our opportunities?
Sorry for the long post, but thanks in advance if you read this far and double thanks if you can help out.
Cheers! -
Most online courses aren't worth anything out here with the exception of TDG and WHMIS, which you have to retake with each employer anyway. For some reason they do seem to like seeing you already have it though. There is an online H2S course which is of no value at all out here. Taking the proper first aid/cpr course and h2s alive will help a lot with many employers, but some of the bigger companies offer it.sharan Thanks this.

Thanks for that information regarding the tickets. I will skip the online stuff.

For the record, we pay for all courses that a driver requires if we hire him.
If he needs, H2S, CPR, CSTC, Pipeline Const. Safety Training, Whimys, TDG, Hours of Service, etc etc etc.sharan Thanks this. -
Thanks, double confirmation to not worry about tickets until we get out there and see the companies face to face. Any ideas as to the best use of our time when going to Red Deer, Edmonton and Lloyminster? I have the list of companies previously mentioned, hopefully they appreciate us showing up in person. Is the demand for drivers still going strong? Spent the day today looking at the on line employment ads, Edmonton seemed to offer a lot of variety.

Canyon in Red Deer had an ad outside today, hiring class 1. Yadda yadda.sharan Thanks this.
