I would agree with the idea of getting a grant from the Government if you have a GI Bill that should get you through school, then when you come out of school holding your CDL Head over to Watkins and Shepard, They will try to keep you close to the house, you may have to run east every now and then but if they can get you on the LTL Delivering Carpet and Furniture to locations all over the place, These stop pays pretty good, you can certainly get yourself some good practice in getting into tight spots!. Good Luck, Put those marks against you behind you they are old news it is all about what is in front of you! Good LUCK!.

Some carriers won't hire a felon, regardless of how long it has been. Others may allow one after 5-10 years. With multiple felonies, it may be difficult to find a position. Before you spend money on obtaining a CDL, I would strongly recommend that you contact some of the starter carriers, such as Swift, Roehl, Millis, Covenant, etc., Explain your situation and whether they would consider hiring you with multiple felonies. If you have had a clean record since, then it may be easier to find a carrier, but it will be a waste of your time and money to go through CDL school without some assurance that you can find meaningful employment. You won't be able to run Canada with the felonies, but as long as you can find a carrier willing to give you a chance, there is no reason you can't work. Each carrier is different and they all make their own rules when it comes to criminal convictions. It is very important that you are honest and upfront about your past. Most carriers run criminal background checks prior to offering employment. If they find something that is not listed then it is automatic termination and it will be even more difficult to find a job. I know a guy who used to be in a lot of trouble. He spent time in prison for drugs and who knows what else and he is now driving a truck. I was surprised that he would have been able to find a job in this business with his background. It has only been a few years since he got out of prison. If he could find a driving job, then I would imagine you can find something as well.

Best advice so far on this one.....to the point , honest , and not judgmental. Also with "real world" truth. Good Luck to the OP...but just remember there are lots of other folks out here trying for the same jobs that have clean records...its gonna be an uphill fight.

Put is at least one year of "paying your dues" meaning One of the big companys that are self insured and have the training programs available. (i.e. Swift, Schneider, Werner, England) Then with a clean record, not a thing on your PSP or DMV record, you should be able to work most any place. You may not get to spend alot of time at home that first year but keeping it clean will get you what you want.
Too bad you are in the north west, the company I work for(almost 23 years) is small and much more personal, but my boss would be give you a chance. Good Luck

Thank you. So, would your boss consider hiring me for one-two years knowing I might ultimately be returning back to Idaho? Would your boss allow any time off for me to return home?

My wife would consider if the pay was right and it still put us ahead and gets me the experience to get a job closer to home, but we have to remain in Idaho for at least two more years until our oldest graduates high school.

Problem is we don't get to the Northwest area much. Last year out of 50 trucks running, we only went 8 times to the northwest. Most of our freight is east, southeast, splash sme sothwest in ther too and some California. Get to divey that up between the guys. LOL
Pretty much we hire only in the south central part of wisconsin, although we run all 50. Our health insurance HMO is based in Dane county.
Also, my boss is very big on his drivers having home time while we service his truck, or get warrenty work on them.
But I know there are several good places out in your neck of Gods country! Loke I said, get teh experience and try to find a smaller company so you're not just a number. Less chance of getting screwed. Benn there/ done that.

Have you looked at sealing or expunging your record. Im in the process of having a felony sealed now. My understanding is you can seal numerous charges on only one arrest case. Hope this helps.

Thank you and yes. I was hoping I could get the first couple years under my belt while I finish off the restitution I have left and then work on getting them expunged.

I've got a couple of leads so far and hoping to hear something back by end of next week.

If you separated from the army with an honorable discharge, you may also qualify for a G.I bill grant, which you can use for a private trucking school. I'd believe that if you went military after your felonies, some companies may be willing to overlook them, since military service tends to straighten people out. also depending on your state, if you just left military service you may be able to just do the written exam, and be able to get your cdl, as some states recognize military training.
