I'm curious about this. I am just entering training for FFE and will be going OTR soon. I just purchased a laptop computer. What are some apps and programs that truck drivers just gotta have for both business and entertainment? I can see how Google Earth with Streetview could be absolutely essential for one. What are your favorites that you find essential or highly useful when on the road with your laptop? Thanks.
What are Apps for Your Laptop That You Can't Be Without OTR?

I sometimes also use MapQuest or a mapping software online to figure out how many miles I AM NOT BEING PAID FOR! I suggest that you get a smart phone and get the unlimited data plan or a data plan where you will not go over the usage as it bet expensive quickly, I use mine for my wireless internet connection to my lap top. May I ask why you picked FFE? Are you going to run in the Oil Fields once you get the experience? I don't want to railroad your thread on Software or apps you use!. So whatever works for you, Go ahead and forget everything you learned at school and learn it all again from your trainer the real way it is ran! Not their schools are bad but they skip a lot so you can get out of their classroom and down to the DMV to get your CDL!.

I don't really use that much. I only keep up with my social media (Facebook, twitter, Instagram) and occasionally Skype. I have the "My Pilot" app on my android, which is a bunch of beans if you ask me since I already use a truck stop guide. I downloaded the Big Road app and another one for maintaining logs and hours of service, but I'm already using paper logs and keep track of my hours anyway. I don't use Google Earth or Street View either, but I don't run in to the same problems as most of the larger trucks do. I have both an Android and iPhone so I'd be open to suggestions as well for making life on the road that much easier.

I don't have any laptop, "apps", but there are several indispensable Android or Apple apps. First, use your laptop to go to Garmin or whatever and update your GPS. Ok, second. First, get a GPS! Then go to http://www.poi-factory.com/ and look over the points of interest and download some to your GPS.
On my Android phone I have: Trucker Tools, all the major truckstop apps, Radar Now, Cam Scanner, Fuelog, Blue Beacon, TriPak, The Weather Channel, TruckerNet, Yelp, and of course, Candy Crush!Chase05 and texasbigbird54 Thank this. -
I forgot about one I use similar to this, Camscanner. Lets you crop all your documents, adjust brightness and you can email PDF files directly from gmail.sosa Thanks this.

I am planning to get the Verizon Smart phone with the Jet Pack hot spot they offer as soon as I can afford it. I picked FFE because they offer the most economical way to get my cdl with basically no charge. Just about every big starter company holds you to a contract anyway, and FFE offered the best deal imho. I have talked to several FFE drivers, and they were all positive about the Academy. I doesn't matter to me that much which company I start with, and anyway, it now looks like I will be driving for KLLM in a couple of months since they purchased controlling interest in FFE. No oilfield for me. I actually want solo OTR. I just want the lifestyle. I actually want to be on the road alone with no home to worry about believe it or not. I'm divorced and no family and am content with that although I'm not a hermit either, lol.

I have an iPhone and the apps I use every night... WeatherBug, JotNot Pro (to produce PDF files of my documents), Instagram and Twitter (to report interesting stuff), and Stitcher (to listen to news, lots of interesting podcasts on various subjects, and stream radio stations from various parts of the US), and Pandora.
