on this possible set-up. i'm not a CB expert by any means, and would appreciate opinions on this rig before i pull the trigger and buy it all:

COBRA 29 LTD ST WX (already own)
-modded; bigger finals, talk-back, echo, etc.

    (2) Astatic 1K Linear Load CB Antenna

    18ft RG 8X Co-phase with Soldered Pl-259 ends

Either an RK 56 or Astatic 636L

my biggest question is about the antennas, i guess. does anyone have any experience with them?

The radio is fine...except for the "stuff" you did to it like the larger final etc.

The antennas will be as good as any as long as they have a decent ground plane to operate over.

Grounding is your best friend when done properly. It will make or break any antenna no matter how expensive.

You'll be fine with this setup.

What's with the echo (it's actually called reverb by sound engineers by the way)

I can hardly understand the other driver's gibberish when they use it. CB's sound better when they're "Radio" quality IMHO.

I guess some people have too much time and money :biggrin_2556:

Reverb is not a bad thing unless the user is clueless. Having it too strong and at the wrong speed does really foul up a transmission. It sounds like the operator has their head in a bucket and they're stepping on their own signal. Duh-uh!

Now, just a little reverb, at the right speed, with a noise cancelling mic will make an operator sound as though they're in a studio, or a big empty room. That is pleasant to listen to, especially if they have a good voice to start with.

You should end your statement saying, "I guess some people have too much time and money, but, too few brains."
