I really feel sorry for the newbies these days, Having to pay 5k or more just to get a CDL, Or having to go through a company program and then making you sign on for a yr. What happened to just getting your cdl on your own and getting a job? I have put ads in local papers for over 10yrs and have trained many young adults for free. 90% of all my students are still on the road today and accident free. I just wish more O/O's like me would take the chance and help some of our younger adults learn to drive. I feel very fortunate to have been taught by a O/O 15yrs ago, And have enjoyed great success and 2,000,000+ accident free miles. Good luck to all you newbies, I wish you the very best

Your one of few. I will be starting school next month at a price tag of $4000, yes i know.....ouch. I have to look at it as an investment that I will eventually get my money back on.
More O/O's should be like you for the ones of us that are eager to learn the business and learn it right. Maybe you can inspire other O/Os to do the same.

Even if you already have your CDL, I though most companies won't hire you unless you've graduated a driving school??

They may but you will go with a trainer for a few weeks, you will know that you are ready to solo, when the trainer falls asleep in the passenger seat.

a lot of the starter companies are telling folks like me (students, or newbies) we must attend a certified school program, or we can't get on with them. (Insurance won't touch a non-school trained rookie, etc....)

I know that CR England will take CDL holders with no experience, while I was at their school for the first day of paperwork, they had 10 or so that got their CDL's on their own, but they still required them to go thru the 7 day (refresher) course, and pay (sign) the same tution form as the 2 week students....

sounds like they were ripping guys off.... $2800 for 2 weeks without cdl, or $2800 for 1 week if you have CDL....

I don't mind the 1 yr thing as long as I can get enough miles to pay the bills, and keep momma (wife) happy.

Wish I could have done the no school thing, since my dad has been doing it for 28 years and agreed to train me for free.... just couldn't find anyone except CRE to pick me up..... no thanks......

You'll find that a lot now days, every company is beholden to their insurance companies and the old way of getting a CDL, studying and going down and taking the tests just don't work anymore.

try your local tech school ,mine was $2000 but they had grant money ,so I did not pay a dime it was 10 weeks instead of 2 or 3 ,when I did my driving test where I was hired at Service trucking in Eustis Fl they couldnt believe how well I was backing compared to Roadmaster and others ,so to me its a no brainer more training cheaper or free

This sounds like it might work for me. I am working in a call center (on the telephone all day) for a company which uses a lot of non CDL drivers, so they may even pay for the CDL training for me. I am going to ask the H.R. person next week about it.

Also, I can talk to the local CC recruiter about the grant program here.

you all would be better off doing something else besides driving a truck, Don't believe all the stories you hear about the big $$$ you can make, Most companies are still paying $.32 to start and that has been like that since the early 90's. It's just a joke out here these days, For being a former O/O and now having the luxury of driving a transporter for a Indy car team. I would never go back to being a O/O. With fuel prices, tire cost, ins, and everything else a guy is lucky to make $500 a week after expenses.

STAY IN SCHOOL (not truck-driving school either)
