I still use my phone in the truck without any hands free device. I don't text or spend a lot of time on it. Talking on a cell phone while driving is far from the most dangerous thing I do, so I treat it like most of the other laws, if I'm doing my thing the way I do it and it happens to be legal, well great, if it doesn't, I don't really care. If they stick me with a big fine, I'll just fix up my logbook, run a few extra miles and pay for it. Fretting over all the hypothetical ways you can die isn't any way to live, I have better things to do than get pulled into other people's fears. As far as losing my CDL, throw me in the brier patch, I made better money when I was bootlegging, dodging scales, no dot#, no med card, etc. I got caught once in four years and it was only because I rolled across a scale just to see what it felt like. Felt like I thought it would.

The only people that ACTUALLY wreck while using a cell while driving are the idiots that more than likely shouldnt even be driving in the first place, PERIOD. not even a car...hell they shouldn't even be allowed close to black top even if they were just riding a bike.

Its really annoying to see people come on here and cry about seeing a another truck driver talking on the phone while driving. SO WHAT! maybe the 6 seconds you took your eyes off the road to look at and acknowledge the fact that someone was breaking the law, maybe you could have just as easily ran someone over. some people don't need training wheels out here.....

well.. Talking on your cell phone is dangerous! Not as dangerous as the idiots that text or check in on Facebook! But its most definitely dangerous! Today you may be okay. Tomorrow as well.. Heck it may never happen to you.. If you are perfect with no performance lost while talking on your cell (I pray hands free) that's great.. But the idiots that don't even belong on the road, are on the road.. Right next to you. Would it be so bad if everyone (including you) did not use their cell while driving? I really do despise those on the road that risk my life and my families so they can schedule a hair appointment for next week! Truly what is so important that you feel the need to drive with a phone stuck in your ear? I truly feel that I can drive and talk on my cell somewhat safely.. But I choose not to be somewhat safe.. I want to be as safe as I can without giving "idiots that don't belong on the road" an excuse to do what I am doing!

Picking your nose while driving is DANGEROUS.

Lighting your cigarette while driving is DANGEROUS.

Scratching your head while driving is DANGEROUS.

Reaching to change the radio station while driving is DANGEROUS.

I think you get my point that there is always something "DANGEROUS" but do we need laws against everything?

Just because you are dangerous while performing something doesn't mean everybody else is.

I just recently bought me an earpiece after all these years only because my ear started hurting and people won't stop calling me.

Everything is relative and subject to tolerance for risk. Maybe the safest thing to do is to put people in intensive care when they are born to ensure they are never subject to bear maulings, runaway trucks, drive by shootings, etc. Of course a lot of people die in hospitals, maybe that isn't a safe option. If we accept that everything we do needs to be dumbed down to the lowest common denominator, we are in a world of hurt.

I don't believe in government licensing, but if I did, maybe the CDL test should require a driver to do the driving portion while talking to his ex wife on the phone, eating lunch, looking through dirty windows, etc., let's really weed folks out. I took my test during a Cushman (I think that's the name of them little motorcycles) rally in Sturgis. Of course the instructor had me drive right through the middle of town, up on the interstate, and back through town, all the while keeping an eye on these mosquitoes buzzing around cutting me off, hugging the center line, and acting like fun hogs do in Sturgis. When I set up to parallel park the 53' bull rack I was pulling, I had to get out and shoo away a little group of "bikers" who pulled into my spot when I was already halfway in. I did stay off my phone during the test, but I steered with one hand and floated my gears like I always do.

Hold on, I got a bunch of cars slowing down in front of me, gotta go.

your absolutely right all those things are dangerous but each of those take a fraction of concentration. talking on the phone, people..(not saying you) get lost in the conversation waving their arms around acting like idiots.. Sure "some" have no problem talking on the phone while driving, others do! The ones that do feel as if they don't. They then merge under my truck and die.. I lose my way to feed my family.. I killed someone.. I then stand on the side of the road begging for money to feed my family. a woman looks up from her cell to hand me a quarter. Or better yet she runs me over. I lose my legs.. Get on food stamps get a fancy electric wheelchair and get rich because others feel bad for the guy with no legs awe... "He doesn't even have a cell phone"

my point is.. Why should the ones that have no problem talking on their cell while driving get to use their cells while the idiots can't.

I really don't have a problem with someone talking hands free on they're cell.. I despise those that text or read their emails while driving!! They WILL kill themselves and maybe someone else!
