Hope all turns out well with him. I'm starting to seriously consider selling my house in kamloops because it's becoming a hassle even with good friends renting it. Sanjel has been pretty good so far and decently busy but I still haven't been making as much money as I'd like. Need to start making a bit more to make the move here worth it but the experience is great. I got green on my first driver assessment with 89% (even though they still want a mentor driving with me to learn the area) so I've been getting a lot of driving time in. What they say about cement only setting at night is true, been on 20ish jobs now and only one or two have been during the day, haha.
Anyone asking questions about jobs, head out to any town or city that you think would suit you and start handing out resumes. I had a job on day one (with no driving experience) and that was during the slower months. Things are getting really busy and every company has hiring signs up for drivers.

let's see if by next spring you still want more work
I'm thinking it's about time for things to start booming one of these days. Who is dispatching cement at Sanjel these days. Garth and Trigger still around? If you get yourself the "Map Art" brand map of Alberta only, it shows all the range roads, as well as some of the major winter roads. It is possible to use it to nail down an exact LSD. Seeing the whole area on a map, rather than following directions(even IF they're right) will be a big help in learning the area. Sometimes finding the LSD and mapping it you can find a shorter better faster route as well. although in a few cases the oil company may want you staying off a particular road due to agreements with landowners.

I prefer the Backroads Mapbooks over the Map Art ones... far superior IMHO. They show everything down to seismic trails but at a fraction of the cost of patch-specific maps. YMMV
-
yeah backroads is good, as long as they cover all the province. Map art is at nearly any service station, the back roads edition"usually" only cover back roads for 1 area. we have both in the camper
Since he is from out of province, I figured he probably would benefit from learning where different towns/villages are in relation to each other. Once I start getting really "backroad" in the patch, I usually talk to the customer, so I have any specific knowledge or instructions before I leave the yard. Starting out in cement many of his jobs are north, south and east of Red Deer more so than west into the hills.

Hi. I am looking for work for early October. I will be finishing my Class 1 training at TRU in Kamloops (104 hrs) and then I will finish my 2 last NCSO courses in AB. I am considering starting as a swamper for Hydro Vac or Fracking etc? while training to become an operator. (Down the line I would like to transition into health and safety). Age 44. Very Fit!! Ex production based BC Forestry worker. I live in Salmon Arm but I am willing to be away from home for as long as each shift requires. I have advanced first aid and all the other oil tickets. If anyone wants more info please contact me.
The Red Deer area option sounds interesting! It would be a straight drive from home to there.. shorter than Fort Mac or Fort Nelson etc.. I had not considered it. Thanks for sharing JamesG and others.

Thanks Nitrogen, I applied for a "bulk hauling" position - not to sure what that involves as I'm new to the patch from OTR Trucking. I think I'll drive up to GP & talk to them anyway - nothing to lose. Also will have to figure out the costs/availability of accommodation up in GP.

Bulk haul N2, CO2, sand (unless sand is third party), maybe drive sand hogs, other stuff?
Lots of hurry up and wait, on call, etc.
Chain up, chain down. Repeat.
Be sure to overeat, and look like you've lived in your bunk for a few months.eires Thanks this. -
Eating as defense against boredom is common but best avoided. Says the dude that gained 15 pounds in last 3 months. Hitting the gym every chance I get now and really cutting down the kibble

Hi,
I just recently got my Class 1 license. I have H2S ticket. What I dont have right now is a job. I would have gotten more safety tickets but financially I am unable. I'm desperately looking for work in the oil field industry. Calgary is my home and moving is not an issue. Can somebody help me get my foot in?
I have been sending my resume all over the place. Also reading the whole thread, I do realize that I should go in person to apply. Can somebody please point me to the right direction and I am willing to be a swamper or any related work which will get me driving a truck. Your help will be much appreciated. Thanks -
Go to red deer Kijiji and look up driver/operator jobs.
Youre only an hour and a bit away. Why not print off 2 dozen resumes and drive around red deer for the day knocking on doors. Tell Em you're ready to work.
