I don't think you'll have a problem. My understanding is you have thirty days to change over. I could be wrong about that so you should call the DPS and confirm.
If I just pack up and head out there...

I tried calling over there but, like most businesses these days, I couldn't get an actual person. They direct you to the website for most all questions. I did go to the website and, if I'm reading it right, it pretty much said that if you license has been expired less than two years you can just renew it. IF that is the case I may be in luck as far as not having to re-do the hazmat fingerprinting and background check. I also read that you have 90 days to change your license over, which would alleviate all my worries anyway. I still will have to have an address to mail it to though. I will figure something out, I always do.

No sense in doing two background checks, unless you are going to be working in a port, which is all the TWIC is for.
If you are hauling crude in west texas, there are NO ports, NO need for the TWIC card.
And many of the ports have there own access card anyway, since the TSA has NEVER completed the TWIC program.sixpackbill Thanks this. -
OK...you probably know better than I do.

all the twic card is for us customs, that's it,if you want to enter a port better have it

Well I got the car packed and am just about done packing everything up that I'm taking. I got rid of a lot of stuff that I have been meaning to and made room to sleep in the car, just in case. I will take off tomorrow morning as early as I can. I'll sleep on the road, hopefully around Houston or somewhere like that. I haven't really done much trip planning yet except for packing and such. I'll do some map gazing tonight and figure out where I'm gonna stay tomorrow night and such. I hope this all goes as planned.

Take care if you are sleeping in Houston. Some areas are very, very dangerous. Best of luck to you on your adventure. Keep us posted if you are able.TaserTot Thanks this.

I went into a port everyday in S TX and they never asked to see the TWIC card once! It is a $$$$ scam set up by the guvment.
-
Oh yes I am very aware of Houston! We used to go party there when I was in high school and I have friends that live there now. Trust me, I won't stay near the city.

Not a PO Box.
Get a UPS or some other mailbox service with an actual address.
They can also forward mail. More expensive than USPS addy.
Last time I checked, you had 30 days to get a Texas dl, and register all your vehicles whether they ever get to Tx or not.
Thats what it says.
Tdot part of Texas.gov website.
Good luck
Mary
