Just got my CDL and am starting a new job Monday as a pump operator assistant in South Texas. If, in the future, I decide that I want to haul crude instead will companies consider this to be valid driving experience since I will just be driving to and from frac sites rather than getting a lot more miles hauling water, sand or crude. Thanks.

If you make it you will be better off working up the ladder. Sand is dead now. Crude is not far behind. The rats like Schneider and Dillion have already showed up cutting the real money that was being made. You won't be an operator for long if you are a good hand. And most service companies pay better and have better benefits than driving companies.

What sorts of jobs or opportunities could I transition into from here? Thanks.

All of them. My next door neighbors nephew started off actually sweeping floors for Key in Midland about 15 yrs ago. Has progressed quickly and was asked last yr to go take over all Venezuelan opps as they clear out of there. Well into 6 figures. If you are good and flexible there is huge opportunity and money to be made in oil patch. But not in sectors where the Schneiders and the other rats can come in and F you.

Will there be lucrative opportunities in the oil field to have your own business or will the industry become vertically integrated to the extent that the best career would be in working for an established company?

It's hard to break into the oilfield as a new business - especially if you don't already know people.

Companies like Schneider & Dillon lose contracts left and right. Sand became saturated with rate-cutters, just like rock hauling did. But crude is different - an owner operator with a spotty safety record, no business sense, and one ratty truck will NEVER be able to haul crude. Not for long, anyway.

I talked to a Halliburton guy the other day and he said to contact Crest pumping services. Does any one have any insight on them? Thanks

A friend of mine works for Crest. They are out of Jacksboro. Work 6 on 3 off. Don't know the pay though but he quit a good freight company to take the job. They used to be Pumpco in Jacksboro.
