is the fuel mileage really good? Like higher than one would expect?
I have heard the ISX do this when the timing was way too far advanced. May have nothing to do with your engine, but it is possible they could have gotten timing off a bit when it was put back together. Too far advanced timing is usually coupled with higher than usual fuel mileage, lowered top-end torque, very low EGT's, and the sound of 'rod knocking' under low torque conditions that goes away when you load the engine.
just putting this out there,...not saying this might be what's wrong,...Rawze

Fuel mileage is the same. When they replace injectors on the old Celect is there something on the injector its self that controls timing? Someone told me they did but I have never heard of such a thing. I was also told the cam follower gasket thickness controls the timing.

if it chatters and knocks, i wonder who is in there sayin "let me the heck outta here, your driving scares the crap outta me".....

The timing was my first thought, cummins for years sometimes had a pronounced knock at idle that's a fuel timing knock but I didn't think they done it at road speed. That's why I asked if the cam followers were resealed when it was overhauled. Another thought is a rough cam follower roller, usually they will miss with a bad roller but I guess its possible to be bad enough to make noise but not miss

I replaced the followers about 3 years ago. I have kinda been leaning towards cam or rollers. Nothing seemed out of whack when they did the overhead. I guess I'll pull the pan off and look.

will be nice to know the eventual answer to this one. I have never owned an N14, but have several friends who do.VisionLogistics Thanks this.

I hate when I put parts on suggested by a mechanic only to find it did nothing to solve the problem. do you hear the sound more in the cab or outside? almost sounds to me like the air compressor.
-
I would like to know the end result of this one too, I would still pull the belts first and see what happens, funny how sound can transfer thru metal. I just feel its run too long since overhaul to be a cam follower or major internal. compressor, fan hub, alt seem most likely.

I am taking it in to the "dyno" on Friday. Hopefully we can get it do it there. I'll keep you folks posted on the end results. And heavyhaulerss it's way louder on the outside. When I pass though a tunnel or pass a van trailer you can hear the echo really loud.

I took it in to the dyno. We really couldn't get it to do it there. I could kinda hear the chatter noise and it sounded like it was in the front of the engine. I did not hear it knock at all though
. We replaced the air compressor but I am still getting the chattering and knocking noise. At least I am getting 90% of rated horse power to the ground! When whatever it is thats knocking blows up I'll let ya know!
