I was just reading a good post in another thread about how it is unfair how the starter companies treat drivers and drivers have to do it to get the better jobs.
My question is what are the better jobs and how do I find them? Are they local? Or are there better long haul jobs than the starter companies. I know there are smaller companies, but what makes some of the jobs better?

Believe half of what you read on here. There are good companies but drivers that are just upset with them. Your best bet is to go to a truckstop and talk to 5 drivers to see if they like the company etc . But no one can tell you what the best job is because I may love my company but you may hate it. It is all about what you want for you.

There's a saying truckers use,(you have to pay your dues)before you qualify for the better paying driving jobs.Meaning you have to have a good yr driving exp.There are many local jobs that pay hourly.But otr you still may have trouble finding a better paying job but will get the miles if that makes since.My last company,the pay sucked but the miles were there.Then there are companies that have bad pay and miles but require exp because their insurance company requires it.If you move on up to tanker or hauling oversize/supersize loads you'll make good money.But hauling general freight,you're not going to get rich but make some better money depending on the company and how much exp you have.

A better job to some may not be better for others or yourself. The good thing is about this industry is that once you get 3 or more years CLEAN driving experience under your belt the world of opportunity opens up for you. Myself, I'm looking seriously at a regional gig that pays o.k., has decent miles, gets me home on the weekends to keep momma "somewhat" happy, with a smaller company that treats their drivers well, runs NO east/west coast, Canada, etc., and has good CSA scores. For me this is looking like the opportunity that will fit best for what I want at this time. I did 12 years of the LTL line haul thing and while the pay was great ($1500-$1600/week gross), I was bored stiff (did the same run every night), hated the company politics and just plain dreaded going in to work every night. I took about 9 months off from driving to run my own landscaping company and didn't think I'd miss driving as much as I do. But now that the landscaping business is slowing down here up north, it's time to truck again and I'm very much looking forward to it. Money isn't or shouldn't be your only motivating factor when choosing an employer. What good is all the money in the world if you're miserable?

Well put slowP....If your doing what you Love then you'll never work a day in your life! Seems hard to believe that people will all the

All good posts here....to the OP , do what makes you happy...if that's long haul , or LTL , or food service or, flat-bedding or, reefer ,or heavy haul , or dump , I could go on and on. Some aspects pay better than others, some are home more than others, you have to find your niche in trucking and then you'll know what the best jobs are for "you"...that's a very relative question...you put 10 drivers in a room....I promise you'll get 20 answers to that question. Give us some more info , on what your ideas are of the better jobs...out of all the regular posters you'll be able to get a pretty good cross-section of replies about the industry...Go ahead tell us.....

I'd like to work for a company that believes *and practices* communication, where I don't have to fight for my paycheck every week. (Dispatched miles pay fine, it's anything else that's a problem.) Slightly higher income, either thru more miles or more CPM (being I'm at a starter company now), with equipment/mechanics that are functional. I'm tired of fighting for repairs, and the repairs not being done properly.
I love living in my truck, have no perm home, no family nagging for home time, and prefer driving everywhere rather than a set route. I have run Canada, fast pass app still in process. no accidents, no points. Only dry van exp, happy to stay with that, possibly reefer. Not interested in flatbed or hazmat.
I have 1 year OTR exp; where should I go? or stay another year? I haven't had much luck with randomly talking to strange drivers at truck stops... (grin) -
Not trying to be funny , but it seems that you may have found a "home'. If you have to fight to get repairs done then that is an issue that needs to be resolved...but you are the one that has the final say in that...if you're not satisfied the truck is in safe operating condition then refuse to move it. Other than that you seem to have what you said you want.

I'm not far from this guy's situation. I have two years in, and like the dry van/reefer I had been doing. Liked going all across the country. I'm about to apply to some places, and I don't really know where to look. Of course there are all the big familiar names, and some of them are good, but what else is out there for me? How do I find it?
