1 dead, 2 hurt after lightning hits tractor-trailer parked in Florida property
A man was killed and two others injured when they sought shelter from a thunderstorm underneath a tractor-trailer and the big rig was zapped by lightning.
The three men 31-year-old Andres Telles, along with Fidelmar Montero and Miguel Lopez were caught outside when a major storm passed through a semirural area southwest of Miami.
They tried ducking underneath the tractor-trailer, but in so doing placed themselves underneath a large object that conducts electricity. A lightning bolt hit the truck, and the electrical current traveled straight through the trailer into the men, authorities said.
We went outside and all three of them were on the ground, Janet Suarez told WSVN 7 News in Florida.
Telles died from the lightning strike.
Rescuers said he was taking his last gasp, there was nothing they could do, she said.
Montero and Lopez were rushed to a trauma center. Their condition was not known.
Lightning strikes have killed 18 people this year, according to the National Weather Service.

Car hauler hits car, pushes it for a mile before stopping
CLAREMONT, N.C. A man told Eyewitness News he's surprised he's still standing after a big rig driver crashed into his car then pushed him for nearly a mile.
The truck driver didn't realize he'd wrecked.
That driver talked to Channel 9 about the scary accident that shut down parts of Interstate 40 in Catawba County near Claremont for hours.
Chee-Sun Tan studied his mangled car against the median on I-40 East. He said only one thing player through his mind before he crashed, "I was just thinking, 'When are we going to stop?'"
The wreck happened before 4 p.m. Tuesday near mile marker 134. Tan said a tractor-trailer rear-ended the car he was driving with his wife and two friends inside.
The truck didn't stop. Witnesses said Tan's car was stuck in the grill and the 18-wheeler pushed it almost a mile, unaware he hit it.
"You know, I was thinking, maybe my car would just flip over and the truck would just run over us," Tan said. "I don't know, until we hit the rail.
Tan was OK, but two passengers in his car had to go to the hospital.
The Highway Patrol said after the first wreck on I-40, there was a second in the area where traffic was slowed.
They said a driver of a car hauler lost control. He was charged with failure to slow down. Troopers said there were minor injuries in the crash.
