Yeah, he was gone before he even returned to the terminal. The company was looked at with DEEP POCKETS so you know everyone around the spill had lawyered up. The sad thing is the driver was telling the truth.

Regardless of company policy, one rule of thumb I like to follow is to never tell people where I currently live or work. I never list where I work on any online profile or post (including LinkedIn) and I always keep my city of residence very general. Several years ago, I had a former friend try to get me fired by calling my boss. The only reason it happened is that she leapt to wrong conclusions and childishly decided to get revenge instead of checking facts. That's not a situation I want to deal with again.

The nice thing about online forums is that it's hard to figure out a post came from an employee unless the employee logged in on a company computer. No one calls themselves by their actual name on here (I would hope). Facebook is easier to track because those posts have your name unless you create a fake account just for the purpose of badmouthing.

As others have said, be very careful using social media. Each time you post your opinions, media, etc., you are creating a social media footprint for yourself. Protect yourself by keeping your privacy settings configured on each site you take part in and make sure you check on those settings. Sometimes these sites make changes impacting your level of privacy when enhancements are made. Be sure to change your passwords to your accounts periodically to guard against being "hacked." If you're account is hacked, that person will be able to post comments posing as you, which is why it's important to stay on top of your social media & email accounts.

I use my real name, but you would be hard pressed to figure out who I am, unless you knew what "71" stood for. I can only think of a few people that would make the connection, and they wouldn't be on this forum.

But you're right; it is best to try to stay anon. I tend to come up with a totally new screen name whenever I join a new forum, and depending on how private I want to be about info will kind of dictate what kind of handle I use. I don't feel the need for extreme privacy on this site, so I feel comfortable using my given name and the identifier.

I will tell you this: I NEVER, NEVER fill out the "About Me" pages in my profile. I don't want people knowing where I live or what I drive, or what kind of ice cream I like. If I feel it's necessary to tell someone something personal about me, I can pm.

    4 BASIC GUESSES:

    1) Your year of birth - 1971

    2) Class of 1971 - grammar school, high school, vocational school, or college

    3) Year of Marriage - 1971

    4) Possible commissioning as a military officer or as a police officer - 1971

    ANOTHER (3) POSSIBILITIES:

    1) 71 could be an abbreviation for Seven Eleven, a store or company that you may or may not have once worked for.

    2) 71 could be the age that you retired from at your last job.

    3) 71 could be 7 years of active duty and 1 year of reserve time in the U.S. Military: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard.

God bless every American and their families. God bless the U.S.A.!

Many large companies are adopting social media policies and I don't see that going away. Now of course, terms of these policies may vary from company to company. For example, a friend of mine worked for a company that did not permit employees to write LinkedIn recommendations for employees who were no longer with the company. Yet another friend worked for a company where the policy was very liberal and basically stated that employees are not permitted to give the impression they are speaking on behalf of the company during their social media exchanges, unless they have been designated to do so by the company.

It's also important to note that several companies have software running that sends an alert when the company name is mentioned in a social media exchange. This allows companies to monitor what is being said about them (good and bad) and let's them know who says it. This is why it is very important to mindful of what you put out there to the Internet, because everyone is watching.

I know of individuals who have completely gotten off of all social media exchanges. At least these individuals are safe from retribution concerning any and all social media exchanges.

Don't get me wrong, I think social media has its place. For instance, I think its great for networking with people, learning from others, conducting business, etc. However, people must be careful and exercise common sense when they put themselves out there. I use social media quite a bit for work purposes, where I put myself out there. However, in my personal life, I tend to keep to myself and restrict interaction to people I know in real life that I trust.
