Generally, do construction companys hire unexperienced drivers for dump trucks. I just graduated school but have no experience. I am trying to stay local if possible. I already read the thread about getting into ltl without experience. What would be the easiest type of local driving to get into? Please don't tell me to go over the road first, I already know that is the most common way to go, but for me that would be a last resort. I want to at least try all local possibilities first. I have a job now (not trucking related, but pays the bills) so I have time to search, I would rather wait a while to find a local job then jump into otr if I can avoid it.

My first driving job right out of school before going to Werner was a dump trk job.Drivers shadowed me till I got the hang of shifting. So I would say yes if you're at the right place at the right time.

Various companies in S.Ca. used to. Robertsons out of Riverside does. Check around.

Chris, the short answer is yes. A more correct answer is probably. The turnover rate for all drivers is pretty high, and for these aggregate companies is higher still. Usually. You just need to get out there and start beating their doors down. Don't bother them with phone calls. Go to them in person, being ready to fill out their application and show them your school certs, CDL etc. Most likely they will either hand you an app and tell you to "sit over there and fill it out," or "fill it out and bring it back."

I was 20 when my construction company hired me to drive a water and dump truck with no experience... I'm 24 now and with the same company and pull and end dump and asphalt tanker for them now..

If you plan to pay the bills driving a dump truck, I hope your bills at small ones. There's a reason why there's a higher turnover rate for dump trucks than probably any other CMV job...it's dangerous as hell, doesn't pay much, and is seasonal.
spring and summer, there's quite a bit of work, especially if there are big road construction projects going. Fall is fast approaching and so the dump truck guys are about to starve for 6 months. If you're young and strong, why not try food service or soft drink and beer? Pays better than the dump truck gig and is nowhere as dangerous.pattyj Thanks this. -
tirplesix, I am willing to do anything to start. I am also interested in food and beverage, but there dont seem to be too many openings,or do they just not post openings? I guess it won't hurt apply everyware. My longterm goal is to do ltl freight but that seems very hard to get into without experience. So I am looking for anything local to get the experience. I guess I will just apply everyware I can think of and see what happens.
