hey vets-wannabes who are looking for reasonable training options and a path into the industry, i learned about this opportunity this morning and would like to pass it on:

Harbor Trucking Association Commercial Driver Training Program
here is a local training and jobs program in Long Beach, CA--for employment at the Harbor Port in association with LB Community College, private companies

you experienced drivers probably already know the LB Harbor is in need of qualified drivers, their ranks have been pared down due to the increased security clearance restrictions, apparently they set up this joint training program to try to fill these positions, this is the second year of the program that is supposed to last two years

i am attaching PDF of the flyer they sent me today, mandatory orientation on Aug 30 at 10a on campus

also, a link to the original news article posted in October 2012 explaining the program

Harbor Trucking Association Commercial Driver Training Program mandatory orientation is this Friday

just want to remind anyone who lives around Long Beach, CA about this truck driving training program at little-to-no cost which will groom you for a guaranteed job at the Harbor, you should seriously consider showing up and listening to the presentation this Friday, it's mandatory if you want to enroll so come anyway even if you are unsure about the program

it may not be the exact situation you were looking for but it is a foot in the door to this industry, you get certified training through the local college on specific equipment at little/no cost, then after graduation you will operate the same equipment on the job at the Harbor

the Harbor is hurting for good drivers and this sounds like a great opportunity so while i am now planning on attending Alliance TD School when i can get the $ together, I am going to attend this orientation anyway just to learn more about the Harbor, the equipment and school curriculum, and hopefully meet some more local truck drivers!

If you are interested in a career as a commercial truck driver, if you are ready to work as a local driver moving containerized cargo in and out of the ports, and if you are willing to dedicate up to 14 weeks to our professional driver training program, I encourage you to join us at our upcoming orientation event.

Here's what you need to know to get started:

1. ATTEND THE MANDATORY ORIENTATION
This 1-hour presentation will introduce you to the world of short-haul truck driving, explain each component of our driver training program, and help you navigate the various eligibility requirements associated with completing this course.
The LBCC Commercial Driver Training Program Orientation will be held on Friday, August 30[SUP]th[/SUP] at 10:00am in room LL102 at our Pacific Coast Campus (see map below). Arrive early to find parking and get seated before the presentation starts; on-campus parking permits can be purchased for $1 at marked stations.

What: Commercial Driver Training Orientation

When: Friday, August 30[SUP]th[/SUP] at 10:00am

Where: Long Beach City College, Pacific Coast Campus
1305 E. Pacific Coast Hwy., Building LL Room 102
Long Beach, CA 90806

2. MEET THE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To enroll in the training program, candidates must meet certain licensing requirements as set forth by the State of California and the Department of Homeland Security, as well as comply with the intake requirements for this program. These basic requirements include:

** Must be at least 23 years old.
** Must pass the intake assessment and interview.
** Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
** Must hold a current and valid driver's license.
** Must be able to present a clean driver history.
** Must be physically able to attain a CDL (49CFR 391.41).
** Must be able to pass a security background check.
** Must be able to pass a drug/alcohol test.
** Must have experience driving a stick shift.
(Please note that priority consideration will be given to US Veterans and their spouses)

3. ENROLL IN TRAINING

The 14-week training program will begin September 2013. For applicants who meet all eligibility requirements and are able to provide the necessary documentation, the costs for training and instruction will be waived (certain application and documentation fees apply; these will be clearly defined during orientation). Applicants that are unable to meet the eligibility or documentation requirements may pay to take this course, when offered as part of LBCC's Community Education Catalog of Professional Trainings.

4. BECOME A LICENSED TRUCK DRIVER

This train-to-work program is designed to fill job vacancies at local short-haul freight transport companies that regularly move containerized cargo in and out of the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. LBCC has partnered with these local employers to ensure that truck driver jobs will be made available to our training graduates, and in turn, that our graduates will be professionally trained and personally committed to filling those jobs. While no one can guarantee job placement, our employer partners currently have open positions for short-haul drivers at multiple locations, and the demand for more drivers is growing.

yesterday, i attended the mandatory orientation for the truck driving training program at LB City College, it was fun because i met a few more professional drivers

the folks that showed up were mostly military vets and experienced drivers, 32 people total, 10 of them women

there is a dire need and they are bending over backwards to help people qualify for the program, they are covering almost $6k per student, all student pays is about $200 for the med clearance, drug test, the usual stuff you would pay, you go to school 4 hours a day for 14 weeks, and you do your BTW at local partner schools, they provide you with everything you need (all textbooks and study materials including logbooks and fed regs, Class A CDL, HazMat, DL51A, TWIC, Clean Truck operation training and of course, driver safety, there are jobs at the Harbor waiting for you if you graduate but you don't have to work there, they just make it so easy to get hired

i was recently able to get money scraped together for a private school or i would jump on this

if you are in SoCal and in a hurt locker for cash to pay for CDL school you should consider it before it's too late--you need to call them by 9/20 to be able to apply, check the info i already posted above for the contact info
