Everyone has different tastes. Ive owned a "hood", I liked it an it ride good and looked sharp. But Ive found a happy medium with my Pete 387. Its customized in and out. Rides great and I can get in tight areas easier. Plus my fuel mpg are a lot better. Im content with my "aero".
Why the long Hoods?

when I drove a mixer ,I drove and Oshkosh that had a hood, I liked it better than the macks that we had because they were cooler with with the engine out front where the macks cab sit on the motor.......none of our mixers had a/c
-
Also hoods can accommodate a larger radiator, so they were sold with larger displacement and bigger hp engines
-
4.5 mpg compared to 6.5 seems like a awfully high price to pay to look cool and have easy access to the engine ,even with the higher resale value
Dice1 and Charli Girl Thank this. -
And you came up with the number of 4.5 mpg because it has a square hood from where exactly?
-
We have one that does that unless it's nearly empty. KW W900L, ISX, Eaton Autoshift. Dealer says nothing wrong with it.
-
There is no way on God's green earth that the shape of the hood is responsible for a full 2 mpg difference. I don't believe that for one second. Now if that hood has a dpf on it, that is the cause. I used to have one and yes, it was a 4.5 mpg truck. However, I should add that the truck I had before my 09, was an 03, EXACT same shape truck, and it got 6.5 every day of the year. Did the same work. So ?????
GITRDUN45, Lilbit, TachItUp and 1 other person Thank this. -
Long hood = longer front springs...
-
I average over 6 year round pulling a step deck with my "hood". I don't care what kind of hood you have, if you're pulling a 12 wide 10 high tarped piece, the shape of the isn't going to make much difference.
An experiment that would open the eyes of the aero crowd would be to take an identical w900 ( no side pipes or outside air cleaners and a T660 (no bottom fairings) and see what the actual mpg difference is. I doubt it's much.Last edited: Sep 16, 2013
