As soon as it's legal everywhere I'll agree with statement...you look at this the way you want, I'll do the same. However the OP got caught in a place where pot IS not Legal...so....he did knowingly break the law.....here's a thought for those that think drug/alcohol abuse , or a history of that kind of behavior is just a "mistake" made while their young...bull-snot it's a choice then/now/and every single it happens....sorry that's the "I" feel about this stuff...... call me an old fart or whatever you please I'll let a 30+ year career of zero accidents/incidents speak for itself...don't need to be told that kind of behavior is OK ....IT ain't .....

 

don't send him to Canada,keep him in the states and send another driver. Why should I have to rearrange things to suit a MISTAKE made by another person ?

You people FAIL to realize that a DRUG charge effects you in more lines of work than just trucking.

 

For all of you that say the op should never be able to drive a truck. Where do you suggest he work? What industries do you find acceptable for someone with a criminal record? They have to work ssome ware.
My opinion is 1 conviction could be a mistake and a lesson learned. repeative convictions is a problem

 

Come back back after 30 years of experience in "this" industry and we'll have a discussion chris886...til you've seen what we have seen....you can't.....not trying to be a know it all , but you haven't experienced the things that Flatbed myself and other 30 + year vets have...we've seen lots of things come and go...you as yet have not....just saying......But to answer that question of yours..let the OP find work in some other field of endeavor that doesn't carry with it the huge responsibilities that driving a commercial vehicle does.

 

All the people that cannot see it from an employers point of view need to do 1 of 2 things

1) Go out and put your NECK on the line for a $150,000. 00 to $200,000.00 truck and trailer and all the associated costs , then load it with a customers product and ask your yourself " Should I let _______________ drive it. "

2) Go to your local tough guy bar , search out the owner of the nicest dressed up RAM PICKUP , go over and tell him you do not know me from ###### but let me drive your truck .

You might THINK differently after the outcome.

I feel sorry for some that come in looking for work , and they have a black mark on their history which hampers them in persuing a decent job.

 

We have a driver that works with us, class B, and he had a drug problem back in the 90s, our boss hired him in 2007, he shows every day, does all the over time they give him and cheerfully pisses in a cup once a week. He is the only other driver out of the 7 of us I think is worth a ####. He got a second chance and made the most of it, but it took a long time to get that second chance and that is how it should be.

 

You guys have valid points, and I am certinely not saying I know nearly as much about the industry as you guys. but at the same time what kind of decent job can these guys get that doesn't come with safety risks and responsibility? I understand he messed up, but if a person can't get a decent job they are going to be sitting at home collecting government money from you and me.

 

He should get a job where he is not at the front of 80,000 pound weapon. A job were his use of pot (past or present) wont get someone killed. And I'm not a new driver.

 

Where do you draw the line? if he murdered someone in 2009, do we say, oh, he wont do it again. Your free to go.

 

Whats makes you an expert on pot rehabilitation. 1 year isnt enough but 4 is?
