There are so many down sides to driving as often discussed in these forums, that I kind of think you realllllllly need to be in great need of a job to do it. Having said that, I think of all the unemployed people who could learn to drive and have a job if they are willing. The upside - if you meet the minimum requirements you can probably get a starting gig, over the road...many of us found out after we started training that close to home gigs are not for the newbies. I did get a great sense of satisfaction in learning to drive but had my adventure cut short due to my wife's car accident. I will say this, don't learn to drive because you think it will be interesting...do it because you need a job and think you can cut it.
Driving, is it worth it?

I'm trying to do it for both reasons...I need a job & I think it will be interesting. Also, once I know more about it & hopefully get better at it, I think I'll genuinely enjoy it. Well, maybe not 24/7, but most of the time

There are a lot of benefits to being a driver these days. Job security is one of them. There are also many different opportunities within the industry. You have to take the good with the bad. Nothing is perfect and it's all about doing research and having a positive attitude.

was wondering where you live, around here no one will hire you withou at least a year exp. are you driving a semi or box truck.

I have a different look on it.. I think if you get into for just a job and to make money, you will get very frustrated and be unhappy.. If on the other hand you are getting into because it is something you have always been infested in and you enjoy it.. you will pay your dues and work your way to a good living doing something you enjoy..
f you have a choice between two jobs.. one pays better but is doing something you do not like and the other doesn't pay as much as the other, but is doing something you enjoy.. in the end, you will have more success in the second job.. because you will be happier and you will do a better job doing something you like..K9OTR Thanks this. -
Truck driving isn't for everyone, and not all people can drive or even "learn to drive".
A good part of what makes a good or great driver has a lot to do with whether those abilities are in your blood (your inner-self) or not.
Even the best of schools and trainers can't make every person a good driver. Some have far better in-born abilities at it, than others. There are some drivers with >15 yrs experience that drive consistently worse than some with only 2-5 years experience. And some with 2-5 yrs experience that shouldn't be driving a Yugo, let alone a tractor trailer!
As far as "Is it worth it?". Well, is the glass half full or half empty? Your likes/dislikes and attitude make all the difference in the world.
I like truck driving because it's both what I like doing and what I consider myself good at doing. For me, equipment plays a big part. I'm very particular.
Driving with great equipment is soo pleasurable, but when I've been stuck in "less than desirable" equipment, each mile is like 5 miles.pathfinder1361 Thanks this. -
I know for me, I caught on very quickly in school, especially with backing up..
One reason for that.. is, I have always been fascinated and interested in big rigs.. I have played with toy ones all my life.. from small hot wheel ones.. to bigger remote control ones..
In school, when the instructor asked the class who had toy trucks at home.. I was the only one in a class of 6 that did..
You can and do learn a lot about how the tractor/truck pulls or pushed the trailer, flated, tanker around..... It was hard for the others to grasp the "S" in setting up to back into a spot.. but, not for me as I learned that from playing with my toy trucks..
What amazes me.. is bow many people will invest thousands of dollars and weeks of time to see if trucking might be for them.. but, not go out and spend .$10 on a toy truck to gain a better understanding.. -
Your mind set, temperament and attitude towards life, change and problems will make or break you......the trucking field for me is good....yet that's me

I like truck driving as a job at least 2 out of 3 days. That 1 out of 3 bad days I feel like I am an idiot for putting up with this work. That's not a bad ratio, right? I pull into a factory or warehouse setting to make a pick up or delivery, and I think how depressing it would be to work confined in that dark, cold building every day. I see people sitting behind computer terminals taking orders, and doing paperwork. There are very few other jobs I see out there that I envy. Most of my friends are professionals...businessmen, teachers, doctors. It's interesting how intrigued they are by my work.
