Many shippers & receivers require drivers to wear them.

Very true. On my very first interview, I was ruled out just for overdressing, and that was just Dockers & knit polo shirt (which I usually store for weddings!)
I could tell instantly, when the owner approached me. He barely even looked at my application.
Next interview... just jeans, workboots, & black t-shirt... HIRED!

OP, don't even think of wearing a tie. The simple fact that you're concerned about "how to dress" tells me that you cannot possibly dress too shabby for the job. Good luck!

One driver I worked with wore steel toed tennis shoes. I didn't know there was such a thing until he bought a pair. I wear the boots to protect the ankles.

Just don't show up with a speedo, that might get you laughed at by some big burly truck driver.

I carried them but didn't need them maybe once or twice a year. Then again I was spoiled with lumpers.

I remember one of them times you had to wear steel toe boots there was two Mexicans in front of me checking in that couldn't speak English. The clerk was yelling at them that they couldn't wear flip flops and she wasn't receiving their load until they wore some boots. Both of them were looking down as she pointed, confused like WTF. :)

Definately go in freshly showered, dress in clean clothes that you would wear on the job.. I would not go in wearing a new pair of work boots.. I would wear my work boots, but not a brand new pair.. don't want to to think I haven't done a hard days work.. stay away from shirts or hats that have sayings or pictures on them.. shirts or hat
When I was interviewing for this one company this kid came in with a Bob Marley shirt that had a picture of pot leaf on it.. he was also wearing a Jack Daniels hat.. it was a nice hat.. but, not for an interviews.. especially as a driver..
He went in before me and was only in for about 5 minutes.. 10 tops.. the next guy, in a plain t-shirt was in there for about 30 and then sent to do a drive test..
I lasted about 20 minutes.. but, I was fresh out of school and they wanted 3 or more years experience..
But hey, if you don't go in and try you will never know..
