I have been a garbage truck driver close to 33yrs now. I've been on a lot of different equipment over the years working for a private hauler and for a City sanitation agency 26 years now. I've been on FEL-front end loader for about 9 yrs now. My avatar is my current truck I've had since new and that pic was the first morning out of the yard with it in Aug '07. Its getting pretty beat up now as you can imagine a truck being used for commercial trash service would get. Its a 2008 Autocar with a Heil packer body. One of the best Combo's IMO. Hope to hear from some other trash haulers/drivers/swampers etc.

I'm not a trash driver, but I do empty the restaurant grease dumpsters I'm sure you're familiar with, but may consider trash for my next gig.
How many stops do you do per night/day? How far from the terminal do you go? How long does a typical route take? What are your favorite / least favorite aspects of the job?
edit to say I dumpster dive a lot while I'm out there at night, and have several that I truly believe I could make a living from if I wanted to. One behind a half price books store gets filled up to the top with books/dvds almost every day.
Any good finds? -
Dumpster diving is one of our awesome benefits..lol Yeah, I see the tallow trucks around here sometimes picking up the restaurant grease. They have some pretty nice rigs they use, some not so nice...lol I have really great route and average between 80 to 100 stops and I am close to town and only four miles to our landfill. I can be done with my routes in @ 4 hrs and then take it easy, do 2nd run to landfill, wash rig, fuel and BS in the yard with the guys before quiting time. We have to stay 8hrs now....ugh! I miss the old days when we went home after the route was done.

Have you every did over 35mph collecting trash
-
Yeah, I do 40mph in reverse!
okiedokie Thanks this. -
That's right. Use to have reverse races on the right away w/ string trucks. 40mph is fast.

Your routes gotta be super close together to be able to do 80 in 4 hours. I could only wish. Our grease routes go 450 miles sometimes, 150 mile radius from the plant.
I've always wondered how many typical dumpsters does it take to fill the truck up? Do you have to empty in the middle of the route?
I used to deliver pizza after work for extra cash, and the pizza driver before me was a residential trash driver during the day, also shagging pizzas from 6-9 after work for pocket cash. He was going to be late one day because he was still on his route, and called the pizza joint to let them know. The manager told him to be there or he didn't have a job.
He got pissed, and pizza delivery being the expendable job, he showed up to the the pizza store in the garbage truck, complete with the helpers, and delivered a pizza order with the garbage truck. He was promptly fired upon his return. He was a legend at that store!Grubby, WesternPlains, bottomdumpin and 5 others Thank this. -
Yeah my route are pretty condensed. I only put 50-60 miles a day on my truck and that includes 2 trips to our landfill which is only 4 miles North of town. I'd say about 35-40 containers and your getting a good load in your truck. Not that you couldn't pack more, but we're required to do 2 loads a day so we put in a little over half the route in our first load. That is a pretty funny story about the guy delivering pizza in his garbage truck...lol First time I'd heard of someone doing that..lol

Ive been in trash for roughly 9 months now. started as trash can delivery, moved up to recycle driver, did a short stint as a fill in transfer truck driver, and now ive settled in as a manual front load resi driver. By far the best job I have had so far. Easy routes, great management. Drive cam took a bit to get used to but all is good now

Hey bro that is very cool! Are you using the corotto can for resi on that FEL truck? It sounds like you moved up pretty quickly there, that is not always an easy position to get. Good for you bro!
