I used to drive a winch truck, SS. It's not the hard as long as you can drive turned half sideways in the seat, looking out the back. If you've got good spatial skills it'd be no problem, but you do need those skills as you have to 'see' where the load needs to go and be able to maneuver the truck to make it happen. That's not always as easy as it sounds when the top of your poles may be 15' behind the truck, where a small steering adjustment makes a large movement back there.
Edit: I knew I had a post somewhere about it, had to go in the wayback machine to find it. Always makes me laugh because Muleskinner was such a character. His post on lot lizards and a hotshot may be the funniest post ever on here. But I digress... http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...ce/47857-gears-gears-and-more.html#post496175

or in another traditional nomenclature: beating, bullying and buggery -
OK for all those who want to know!!! DO NOT LIVE IN A MAN CAMP.... PERIOD!! lol
-
On mancamps, I loved living at the Target Logistics places in Stanley and Tioga. First class, no complaints. I just wish they rented to individuals for less than the corporate rate of almost $4000 per month. Even at ND wages, four grand is AT LEAST one week's gross earnings. That said, TL has it nailed on how to make life easy for workers and absolutely maximize their time. No mancamp is home, but if you're there to make the bucks to send back home, TL has it down pretty darn good. Drop-off laundry, two restaurants 24/7, game room, gym/sauna, wifi, mail, private room with A/C, weekly cleaning service, convenience store... come on guys, not doing too badly.
I have heard horror stories about other "man camps" that were no more than a mobile home, an RV, or some dilapidated old structure with three guys sharing each bedroom, and one bathroom between twelve guys. THOSE ARE NOT MAN CAMPS! Those are conditions impossible for the average person to get needed rest and time off. JUST SAY NO to such conditions. I would say the same to employers wanting you to live in your truck. Unless you ENJOY OTR-style living after getting oil on everything inside and out, without a daily shower, those conditions are equally deplorable. -
A) Who's making $4000/wk?
B) Not the kind of man camp most are looking at. I know those that provide free food are out there, probably for the people making $4000/wk. Most people aren't getting free food and all those amenities. -
I, too, enjoyed the many Muleskinner posts! He was a character, and very funny! I remember reading the lot lizard posts, and a story about a "hooker heel" too! Many of the older posts and conversations you, Muleskinner, and others participated are pure gold for information and entertainment all rolled together into some great reading material!
The Gears, gears, gears post was great, too! Do you have a picture of these trucks that you could post for us who are new to the oil field equipment? I've only seen outside of winch trucks. Ive never been inside one, and I'm not sure what a two pole truck is?Last edited: Oct 9, 2013
