Why is it two years compared to everyone's one year? Just to confirm, you do receive benefits after the first year?

Yes your recive for second year depending on how your post 9/11 or Gi Bill is. It all depends on how many years you have and how much of your VA benis are left.

I did nine years active and haven't used anything yet since being out JUL 2012. Is it best to go with Roehl for the whole training? RDTC, then 2 yr Apprenticeship program? Or local CDL school, then 2 yr Apprenticeship?

I have yet to start the program I have done all the paper work to attend RDTC and then signon with the honors program. By thoughts are Use the GI Bill for RDTC and not have to stick around if the Company doesnt work out form me once I go solo. The honors program is a OJT program set up thru the VA to pay you while you work along with the regular company pay. So if after RTDC and 6 months or so driving for Roehl it doesn'w work out I could always jump ship to another company like Schnider that has a VA approved program and start there untill I have exhausted my GI Bill. Or move to local company with out having to owe anyone any money out of pocket. If that makes sense

How long has all the paper work taken you before you'd start?

I could start at any point I wanted now that they have all my paperwork and have completed my DOT physical. I am choosing to start late Nov. From the point that I did the online application to the point that they called and got everything done was about a week.

I did the program a few years ago. At that point Roehl just gave veterans free CDL training with no strings attached. That was back in 2008 though. Once I was in the fleet I had mixed feeling about running as an Honors Program driver. Some weeks it was nice to know I would receive a paycheck even if the miles were low. Other weeks I busted my butt and would have made significantly more money as a mileage driver (including tarp pay, Canada pay, etc). Its a nice safety net in the beginning but once you get a rhythm down and are proficient at your job it makes more sense to switch to mileage, IMO. My advice would be to keep track of what you'd be making on mileage and when you start seeing a pattern of making less on the program to switch.

Wait, so what do they pay you when in the Honors program? Thought is was your normal company driver cpm + your pay from the VA for two years?

Back when I did it we got a "salary" from Roehl that was supplemented with VA pay. Like I said, that was a few years ago so it may have changed.
