I ran one for years and never had a problem, but you had to put them in just right and I think a lot of people didn't install them right. I even had one go bad, called K&N and they overnighted a new one to me, no questions asked.

The biggest problem I have seen on K&N filters is that people over oil them. I've had one on my '87 F150 (302) for 200k and I've cleaned and reoiled it once. I guess time will tell when I pull the heads off and look at the cylinders, might happen after 300k, it's at 280k now.

K&N Heavy duty filters are dry filters no oil just wash it out when I pull 35 in on restriction gauge.

Thanks for the info people. Seems to be a lot of hate towards K&N, but I bought the 2 and put them in my 800hp pete so I see if they're any better than paper baldwin. K&N gave a 3yr 300,000 free replacement warranty on them. $435 for 2 air filters is a lot of $ but I'm always trying new things for HP and better air flow. Thanks again everyone.

I look at mine every oil change and grease job, I also blow mine out a couple of times a month with compressed air. And wash it when the restriction gauge gets up around 35% . Clean the canister before you reinstall your DRY filter double check the seal and you are good to go.

    bigstank Thanks this.

I read a study online last year that compared air filters.

Regular old paper air filters worked the best at removing dirt. (and they were a lot better at it than the other filter types)

More expensive doesn't always equal better.

I was going to buy the K&N filters, read the study, and changed my mind.

I would like to try the Donaldson ELF air filters, but I can't find anyone who stocks them.

I just don't trust K&N stuff. I hate dealing with their filters whenever they come in. The factory paper filters do the best filtering job and the gains from a performance air filter only simply aren't there IMO. I could be wrong though.

We burn through air filters fairly quickly. I'm lucky to get a couple months (500hrs) out of one on the feed truck but for $40, its not terrible to put a new one in.
