I've often wondered the same thing! I've actually, believe it or not, heard almost as much good as I have bad from drivers I encounter at work. I too believe I can handle the lifestyle, and I'll have my husband there with me to help me with all the "junk" you're thinking of.
I currently make very little money, have a horrible corrupted boss who wants me to look bad, even though I've done well, and worked there longer than anyone. Its favoritism times 100! Well, what could be much worse as far as companies are concerned as far as being treated goes? I don't think they'd treat drivers this bad. Not saying they'll be treated super great, but it is pretty bad where I'm at. Even if it is worse at a trucking job, at least I'm getting paid more, and don't have to put up with jealous co-workers!

"I have seen several rigs going down the freeway with bicycles strapped behind the cab"

I didn't even know you can do that! Its funny because I was telling my husband yesterday that I wish we could bring the bikes, but I didn't think you could strap them on your truck! I guess you proved me wrong in a good way! Is it probably O/O's that can do this?

Depends on the company. I imagine if you could properly secure the bikes without damaging the truck your company might allow it. Come up with a plan and present it to your employer it never hurts to ask.
