I see Schneider has a truck driving simulator, I seen it on a Youtube video. They say it helps in mountain training and bad weather training.

I am curious if anyone on here has done the simulator and do you think it is a good training aid. I seen a post on here when is the best time to start your training, some say winter while you are with an instructor and others say spring so you can have a lot of time to just get familiar with driving a truck.

So that is why I am curious about the simulator.

Some companies have a simulator for bad drivers that safety calls in .You have to be able to pass it before that company will release you to the road once again.I learned driving during the winter. My first run was to Calif donners pass.

The simulator will not give you the experience you need to go into different weather conditions. For me, feeling the truck during certain situations is what let's me know what's happening. You feel nothing on the simulator. After spending some time in a truck, you get to know how the truck should feel when doing things like turning, shifting, stopping. The simulator doesn't have those 'feelings'. You may however come step off the simulator feeling sick. I had to walk slow, cause I could have easily vomitted.

If it is the type of simulator that you sit inside of, where the windows are actual monitor or LCD screens, and the whole thing moves/vibrates too to feel real, then its ok I guess. Some people got a bit sick, either cause they were staring at the screen rather than trying to stare through the screen to judge distance. I don't think its a good substitute for the real thing. Would need actual exp in a real truck, with real traffic, to get the hang of it. They can do silly stuff too, like make a person appear in front of you to test reaction time, blow out your steer tire, tornado, black ice, etc.

The above poster is right, lot of people get up getting sick and vomitting, and the 'feeling' just isn't right, which can only be acquired in a real truck.

I had one company make me use it a few years ago. I thought it was interesting yet so ####### unreal it seems useless. If I didn't spin the tires up the hill at 30 km/h how did I lock the brakes up going down the hill at 17 km/h????

I've used Schneiders simulator and it's more like a video game. The only experience I got from it is what you should do in certain situations.
