Hey I'm working for an oilfield service company in north dakota, small one 12 trucks. I've worked there 8 months and no serious complaints (checks don't bounce) I was driving to a swap out point with two other drivers last night for my shift. The oldest tenured driver for the company pulls into a liquor store and comes out with a pint in a paper bag and stuffs it in his duffle. I couldn't believe what I just saw. The guy is a heavy drinker but thisis the first time I've seen him do this.
I know its illegal to even posses alcohol in a cmv much less drink it. I know at one point last night he made a stupid mistake most rookies don't even make loading production water into his vac truck. I'm 90% positive he has been drinking on his shift. I told my roommate and he said I am obligated to tell our manager. I agree to a point. Chemistry is important up here because I live with 17 other drivers 24/7 I don't get to go home. I don't want anyone to lose their job. But I don't want him screwing up our contracts or worse hurting someone. I was thinking about going to some of the older drivers to confront him about it before I go to the manager. Not sure how to handle this. Thanks for any advice.
moral dilemma, or legal dilemma?

chaz,
Wow. I really understand where you're coming from, and do sympathize with you, being in that "between a rock & a hard spot" situation.
I don't take any safety matters lightly, especially what is likely to be at the level you describe.
Only you know best on how you "think" a trusted senior coworker might be able to intervene and help, without dropping the hammer on that fella's career.
Tough call, but something must be done before he kills himself, or someone else.
There's always the possibility the other seniors may turn against or alienate you. Only you know them, so use your best judgement.
I would try and go that route before I'd go directly to "the boss". JMOchaz7r Thanks this. -
Report his donky....Do you really want him crashing into your rig when he's drunk behnd the wheel? There is no place for drinking as a truck driver and if he cant control himself he doesn't deserve the privilege of driving a truck. Who cared about him loosing his job. Its a lot better then getting fired when he gets in an accident.

Going to other drivers can cause backlash also. Maybe try to talk to boss but ask not let known you blew the whistle. Figuring people mind set if it known u dropped the dime could bring hate and discontent from the other drivers but if you can talk to the boss with out others knowing or ask the boss if he knew so so driver is buying liquor and transporting it in his trucks.
KF7WTV and Truckergirl0720 Thank this. -
You have one option. Drop the dime. Maybe leave a note for the boss under the door or something anonymous. But drop the dime on this driver, before he kills someone.

I'm new, but maybe have someone outside a friend call your boss and tell him anonymous, the company snitch always ends up getting some kind of back lash. Don't mean to call you a snitch, just couldn't think of a better way to put it.

This guy could end up killing someone and your all worried about how his co workers will treat him? If i had the guys name I'd report him right now

I been sober 25 years
I drank on the job
I endangered others
I would suggest you talk to him or the boss
if you don`t someone may get hurt or worst
recently we saw a video of a city bus driver parking
the bus and going into a likker store buying 2 bottles of booze.
The news got hold of it.That day the driver got fired.
he has a drinking problem for sure
babying or enabling him will only hurt himTonythetruckerdude and kaygirl Thank this. -
Have absolutely no liking for any IDIOT that thinks that drinking and driving is acceptable. Too many people are at their final resting places and families missing loved ones because of ***h*les likes this. This guy needs to be reported to the local authorities if driving on public roads or your company safety director if on company property. Sorry to anyone that feels otherwise, but its SOB's like this that give truck drivers and the industry a bad name. Its time to quit the hand-holding and good ol' boy attitude and just get rid of the garbage when you see it. As others have said on here, the guy he hits when he's driving all liquored up could be you. If you get a bunch of backlash from the rest of the drivers, then all I can say is your probably working for the wrong bunch. I'd much rather hated by my company and still alive then my family receiving death benefits. Good luck.Tonythetruckerdude, Driver5, KF7WTV and 1 other person Thank this.
