Because the idiots have a truck that's leased on but they still have their company name on the truck.

That statement is false cuz the company I work for the guy owns and he has the vin number and US DOT number and that's it and he has quiet a few trucks.

One company might have different divisions like Schneider National, Schneider Transport, etc or bought out other carriers. I worked for a company that got a new MC# when they moved to another state plus they had two other companies they bought out and they ran with their numbers too.

Anyone of them numbers will point towards the same company. It's kind of a display of strength. Look at me we're big!

Because adept carriers understand that information must be easily seen for le personal ie weigh station technology, which grabs it off your truck and aids in a truck not being delayed. Certain states key in on certain numbers.Ie vin#
Those whom make it hard to read are more likely to be pulled around in today;s electronic environment .
Always have a clean plate and make sure your dot number's are readily viewable.

Also, don't some states require their own registration numbers be visible? Like New York and I think Kentucky?

If you don't want to go into the scales in Colorado.. You have your VIN number on the side of your truck. They will pull you in once and check your paperwork every year... And once it gets in their system you will normally drive right on through. US DOT numbers are required. iCC MC numbers aren't.. But most will put on the side. That will also show others that you can haul others freight. Then some places like Quebec has their own numbers that if you go through.. You have to have. Canada trucks you will see a gross weight on the side of the trucks. If you haul intra state freight in California you have to have a CA number.. You don't see the numbers on the side like you used to. Some would have 10 or 20 different state authority numbers beside the MC numbers. When you ran interstate before deregulation you had to be approved by each state that you ran through. To show the authorities that you were able to be in that state. Then there is supposed to be some place on the side your truck number. Does this answer you question? Like on my truck I want to haul interstate in California. So I have CA number, have my US DOT number, my MC number, and my VIN number.. And on my hood my truck number. You can only have one MC number and DOT numbers unless your company is leasedto another. it has to say leased from XYZ trucking with or with out his authority .. And a sign that says leased to with ABC trucking authority's numbers.

Is there an easy solution to temporarily apply numbers to a truck that is a short term rental?

Look at vinyl . A heat gun will take them right off. Or even a hair dryer
