I wasn't able to do over $2.00 per mile to the truck with either.
i think you would have to do a lot of short stuff or oversize to have that much left after the company takes their share. There are some guys that do it at Mercer but they work far harder than I want to at this stage of my life.

Definitely would be possible if you wanted to do heavy haul and oversized. Landstar has plenty of both. Mercer I'm not sure about.

I have run under my own authority for years. I tried leasing to a carrier for a short time. One good thing came from it. Made me realize how good I had it on my own.

At Mercer, by the end od 2014, everyone will be on E Logs according to Lynn ( safety director ). Also at Mercer, They almost always flat refuse to let you load LTL freight , even if you have 30 feet of deck open and a 10,000 pound load on..
Mercer used to be a very high percentage direct shipper freight... no longer.. the last several loads that I've hauled was broker freight.. so 20 percent + to the broker, then 26 percent to mercer... does not leave much room for a decent profit..
I have also accepted loads on our load board, to find out that there was 63 O/O's ahead of me.. in the last few months, our freight rates has dropped like a rock... super loads booked and hauled at general oversize rates...
But, at mercer, I have not had to worry about getting paid.. they will help you within reason any way that they can.. if you need it..

All new hires must have EOBR and a 1997 or newer truck.

I've never had any problem getting LTL loads when I have open space, but we have few LTL loads available. Calling the local agent is normally best.

I have never had a problem with that either, but then I don't take counting on putting an ltl with it, for the reasons you stated.

sounds like Harold keep trying to put a square peg in a round hole
