I have a Calif CDL and am unemployed at the moment. My DOT medical card (DL 51) expires in about 5 days; should I go get a physical and renew it, or wait until I get a job and let the employer pay for it? Any penalty letting it expire other than being able to drive?.....thanks for any input

Some employers will accept you having your own MED card and some demand you to go through them to get one for work. So its up to you.

I think depends on state. CA probably has a reinstatement fee.

Go get a new one. Lived in NM, CA and now VA. Better not to let it lapse.

Your medical card must be tied to your license through your state DMV. You will need to present your long form to the state. I don't know about California, but Florida has a place online for self certification. When I did it, I had to enter my doctors name as well as his medical license number. I also had to scan both sides of the medical card and submit those too.
If you do not certify it with the state, your CDL will be cancelled. this is a new regulation that started earlier this year if I remember right, but it may have started last year.

I had to dig deep for CA. They hid it good.

They will downgrade you to a non-CDL. I couldn't find a grace period. I also found an interesting law that the employer has to pay for it if you don't already have one.

I think it would be easiest and cheaper to keep everything current.

Yeah your CDL will be downgraded to a class c until you renew your medical card. If you don't renew it with-in a year, the state will cancel it permanently and you will have to start fresh again.

I'm in Ohio but it would be wise to walk your med card in to certify. At the registrar I went to, he input all the info in while I was standing there, gave me a receipt that showed MECert as paid and a copy of what he did. They take a hard copy to be filed in Gov no mans land(or where ever paper goes to die when in Gov hands)

Was really simple process on my end.

Definitely thoroughly read your states rules on this as they arent uniform across the country as I understand it.
