I'm about to get back in a truck after a lot of years gone by. The only thing I drove was a nine speed.
Did they just redesign the whole trans or just add one to the top end? I realize much has changed with computer technology now running internal systems. Is 10 more a cruising gear than anything else?
Heck, I started driving an early 80's mack day cab back in the early 90's and that was a single axle 6 SPD. LOL {no power steering} That truck should have been put out of it's misery long before I ever got it.![]()
10spd VS 9spd, what changed?

The last truck I drove had a 9 speed and my current truck has a 10 speed. The first few days I was in this one I wanted to skip 6th as that is the only difference in the shift pattern (6th on a 10 speed is in the same spot as 1st on either one). If the truck is set up right top gear will be your cruising gear on either one.

A 9 speed has basically a granny gear on the low side that you can't shift into in high range, 5 gears in low and only 4 in high. A 10 speed is the same in high and low, 5 and 5. Basically a 9 speed is just a 13 that you can't split the top range. Unless you are talking about a super 10, then it gets really confusing.
-
No body I know of uses 1st gear. I skip gears myself. Really depends on how much weight your pulling.
-
Not that much difference, I liked a 9 better, but haven't driven 1 in a very long time. It's a big jump skipping 6th when you are loaded, so it soon cures you of doing it.
I skip gears all the time going down hill and if I have to pull a hill before shifting, I shift 2 at the top for the most part, whichever gears it involves. -
9 speed? Oh tht was for the freight haulers.. I miss my 10 x 4, 2 stick
Now only running an 18 speed -
I'll take a 9 over a 10 any day. I've got an 18 same pattern as a 9 have driven a truck with a 10 speed before and they're a royal PITA. Missed 6th gear more times than I could count finally got it down. Got back in my truck kept trying to go back into low after I went to the high side. Ugh. And don't get me started on one of them cluster #### super 10s.
Eaton "the super 10 is the preferred transmission of the professional driver"
I'm not a professional I guess. I'll keep my 18spd. That super 10 is nothing but a pain. No range selector only a splitter yea not right. And now they come with an auto shift top 2 gears. That'll scare the living piss out of you when that tranny decides to drop a gear on you and you're not expecting it. Guess it comes in the same format for an 18 too. Wouldn't know don't care to. I'll put a 9spd direct drive in my truck before I put something it in that shifts automatically. -
I still run an old double over 13 high gear is up against the dash. I get in another truck no big deal I automatically run a standard pattern. Get in a 10 or 15 speed become a newby again. I guess cause I never use loe gear in anything hardly its just unnatural to hit it in high range. Super 10 is a curse on the earth as far as I'm concerned.

Only thing awesome about a 9 speed. can not forget the pattern to a
18 speed
Depends on which ( 10 speed ) can you elaborate OP ? -
Agree with the super 10. Everyone has opinions and they should burn with the sun for ordering a super 10 lol.
