Hott Rodd, milskired, MJ1657 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I saw that load on uship. The bid went negative and the driver is actually paying the shipper to haul their freight.

We've had RGNs for a long time...probably 10 years. The picture was because we recently started hauling combines. Maybe you saw my other thread about moving into heavy haul. We just bought an RGN with a flip axle to try the light end of heavy haul.
-
Oh I thought it was a new thing for you guys. Why did you shy away from combines all this time? BTW, I didn't take any of your freight leaving IA, but I might be back Thursday so who knows if I'll load some green stuff.

If you can get a rate you like, be my guest.
For a long time, our niche was small specialized. We liked to take a not quite full load, add something to it, and come out with a good rate. Things like combines and planters that don't leave room for extra pieces, so they weren't that attractive to us. That niche has kind of eroded with the large number of recent entries into our sector. They like to haul the smaller, easier loads. So we have to look for other niches to keep our rates up. We have great drivers that can handle more difficult loads, so we are trying some new things.milskired, old time, Cluck Cluck and 4 others Thank this. -
I was typing a response, apparently CP beat me to it.
Traditionally, the premium on the bigger stuff hasn't been significant enough to justify the added exposure, additional operating costs, and working capital being tied up. So, we just stayed away from it. Now, I don't need to go into detail, but too many people are are at the table fighting over the meat and potatoes. To keep RPMs, utilization, and service as high as possible, we feel that we need to expand our service offering. We're competing with major carries who are under a lot more pressure to keep hundreds and thousands of trucks running, versus 35 open-deck trucks, like us. Additionally, RORO freight is getting larger in weight and dimensions. We need to build our specialized network and hone the niche we operate in because we tend not to compete on price, like many others.passingthru69 and old time Thank this. -
Nice light three drop run. Just didn't like the war zone on 80 coming across the sisters and Sherman. Anyone else play with the high winds in Wyoming?
