I'm looking for a good gas truck. I will be running this hotshot truck from the oilfields of the Gulf Coast, LTL and perhaps escorts. What make/model have you all experienced to be the best? I won't be pulling a trailer, and will not be running a diesel/flatbed. Just looking for a good pickup truck that I can make a few dollars on. I would like for as little maintenance as possible, and to have as much value in my options as possible. I'll be buying used, and will be looking to lease this vehicle on with a hotshot company that I already have ties with. Any suggestions? Oh, and I must say that I will be driving and am very familiar with the business end of hotshot trucking. Just looking for the best bang for my buck... Any and all suggestions/experiences, horror/good stories appreciated. Thanks!

Most hot shot owners that I have met seem to prefer Dodge. They seem to hold up well under a hot shot operation. I prefer diesel, but any major brand of truck will work for you if you won't be pulling a trailer.

I have had better luck with Fords myself running 3/4 ton gassers. The 5.4's don't have a lot of pulling power but run well over 250k with little problems. The newer trucks with the 6.2 gasser are running 12-14 mpg empty, plenty of power and have 2 over 200k and no problems. These trucks have multiple drivers on them.
I have a local P&D service that I use. Its a one man operation and all he runs are Chevys. The way he is setup on any average day he will have 50 stops. He started with 1/2 ton Chevy's and ran them as high as 425k on the same motor, he had tranny troubles though. About every 100-150k it was time for a rebuild. When he went to a 3/4 ton Chevy, the tranny issue went away. His current truck has 350k on it and still running daily. I know a lot of other folks that have had good luck with the Chevy trucks too.
All that said, I have a 1/2 ton Chevy with 4.3 V-6 for my personal truck and I run the wheels off it. Have had 1500 lbs of lumber in it without much issue. It rides like a dream and cruises 90 on the highway with ease. Its the best Chevy I have owned to date. I got it cheap and figured what the hell, I will try it.
Also on the 4.3 engine, I use to know some oversize escort drivers that ran the mini vans with the 4.3's, they swore by that motor. Back then they were telling me they would get 500k out of them before a rebuild......BS or not, I don't know.

It all depends how much you want to spend and how much weight you plan on hauling. Do you want a gas miser or fuel isn't an issue?

I'd like to try one of the new 3/4 Rams with the 6.4 Hemi... its a new option this year so I dont know much about them in the pickup version but the 5.7s do rather well. They seem to get decent mileage as long as you keep them maintained well and run seafoam through them every once in a while to keep the intake clean.
