Hey everyone,
Im new to the forum but have done a lot of reading on here. Im getting to the point of doing an overhaul on my 5EK cat. I have been told be several people it cannot be built to a 550. The truck is a 96, built in May of 1995. The serial is 5EK2XXXX (not sure of the last 4 digits). On the tag it says 435/455 Hp and it is supposively turned to 455 according to Cat. The extra HP would be nice always pulling 100k+. Anyone have any input on this?
Thanks in advance

cat might not make it a 550 but it can be a 550 with the right ser# for liner kits might need a cam i think some of the early cat had a diff cam but im sure some body will let you know what ya need

I figured Cam, turbo, injectors, piston kits....all which would be done under a normal inframe. Then an ECM flash.
Thanks for the reply and i am interested to hear what others have to say. -
I think they meant if a guy was to just go and flash your ECM that he'd cook his motor. If you rebuild the motor using the 550 parts and then have the ECM flashed I don't think you'd have any problem.

Pm me the correct serial number and I will check it out for you.

Use 58 inj. 800 hp cam and right cylinder packs and you got a good motor. I have built 3 great motors 7.0mpg driven right. I will find the right part number for cam. I am sure someone knows the full part number of the injectors.

Ive got dang near same motor as u, 1995 5ek 25xxx heres what mine has done to it,
600 hp cam
pdi turbo
port and polished manifold
injectors at 5232
600hp 5ds ecm file
fuel temp wire
straight piped
swapped out stock cat fuel water sep filter head for an aftermarket one that flows 150gph only pullin 3 of vac, this was one of the best things i did, plus got rid of all 90 elbows on suction side of fuel pump
upped fuel pressure 10#
My motor runs pretty cool, egts never over 700 on a hard pull, water temp runs cool, i have no issues at all, ive never had it dynoed so not really sure where its at, it pulls like a train and gets in the mid 6's for mpg pullin a rack. I would think mine is all of 600hp or more and it runs great
Just curious what issues or symptoms ur having that u feel u gotta rebuild it? -
Sounds like you have a lot of work done to it. So you started with a 435/455 as well? Mine needs a head gasket. Got 550k on the rebuild
-
I cant PM yet but i was previously incorrect on my # The motor is actually a 5EK49726
Thanks

Yep started at 435, i was told our blocks can handle up to 700ish hp without issues, i think makin sure the motor has enough air flow for the fuel helps alot keeping all temps down.
My bud has a 6nz with a hot ecm file but he wont spend money on aftermarket turbo and runs a crappy stock cat turbo, his egts are 900-1200 which imo is really dumb
When the head gasket went any damage happen?
