Hi,
I have a CDL A and have been doing local runs in a class B truck with a A trailer for a few years. I was laid-off, went to school and found no work. I am back to looking at trucking as a career now. I will need a get a restriction removed from my licence and a CDL mill seems the best option (no tractor-trailer restriction (8)). I plan to pay for it myself so I can have my choice at companies. My number 1 question is this:
I have two families, several hundred miles apart. Two of my children live in NC the other one is in NE. I want to use both places as my "Home," and split the home time as equally as possible. Will this be a feasable plan, or will it get shot down? I am not overly concerned about the amount of home time, as long as I can send a few day in each place every couple monthes. I guess a big thing to look for is a company with a hub nearby both locations. Any advice or coment?

Some companies will let you split home time. When I drove for Marten (Mondovi, WI) I used home time to spend Christmas with my sister in Florida. They even dead headed me about 300+ miles to get to a terminal to park the truck.
If you already have a class A, some companies that have training might help you out with the restriction. Call Roehl and talk with a recruiter.
They also have pretty generous home time options. The most popular is 11-14 days out and 3 days home. I'm not sure if they'll let you split home time, though as it depends on freight. When I drove reefer at Roehl I could never get into the Stafford, VA area, even with a home time request, but with Marten it was about once a month.YELLOWROSE0613 Thanks this. -
Update:
I have chosen a school and started the enrolment process. It will be at a nearby community college. The next calss is January, long time to wait, but I think the better school is worth it. They also have night classes that I plan to utilize, so I can overlap my current employment with training. I will have a little vacation time next year, so I plan on burining that up before putting in my notice. This monday I will get a new DOT physical, after seeing the optomitrist, and then get a new Learners Permit from the DMV. I still have 3 years on my curent CDL, will I be able to retain that without paying AGAIN? I am looking at Crete as a potential employer, as they have ideal terminal locations and sound like a pretty good company, especially for new drivers. As I said before I will be requesting hometime in both Nebraska and North Carolina. Not often, one or the other every two or three monthes. The recruter for crete was nice, but relyed some disturbing information. She said "I asked about home time, they told me they were not a travel agency." That is a remark that irratates me. I am not asking to travel, I am asking to see my children, also it seems that with a few options of where I will accept hometime would be benifecial to the company, as they have flexability in finding freight. Anyway, with that little bit of venting out of the way. I feel like I need a few other good choices in mind as soon as posiable. Not sure who to look at. I reshearched Roleh, their website said they run in all 48 states, but the majority would be east of I35, about 150 miles east of where I want to be. I have all but rulled out Swift, usa truck, and PAM. I mean if it comes to it I will take whatever I can get, but I would perfer a company that I havent already decided I will leave after 1 year.
Just updateing my welcome wagon post. I cant wait to get out there!
A few odd questions,
1 What kind of internet connctivity do you guys use? I have a phone but it wouldnt work so well with these fourms or the like. Memory is limited to the few apps I have installed.
2 When on the road, a few hours from any required break. but I really have to piss. Would you just grab a bottle or is there another option (other than stop early)? -
If you have to pee... Stop the truck. It doesn't matter wether you go in a bottle or not, but for everyone's safety, please stop when you go.
I try not to drink too much when I'm driving but if I have to go and there is no place to stop, like a rest area or truck stop, I might pull off on a ramp and then get back on the on ramp and stop there, if there's room on the shoulder (I never stop on an off ramp). I always keep at least one empty drink bottle for such urgencies, do my business and then resume driving. -
Yeah, I didnt count that as a "stop"

You can simply flag it on your log, you don't have to go to line 1 or 2. You might only be ther for a minute or two.
