Yes you are naive it is a problem).
Some carriers charge detention and don't pay the driver. Some don't pay enough. Some try to wiggle out of it. Some have the audacity to put a cap on how much detention hours you can get at once . Most carriers the line is 2 hours free, then you get paid and they change the detention rules at will. Some customers they allow 4 hours free. Time is money and we need to paid for all of are time once we get up in the morning till we end are day.
I'm not into giving shippers or receivers any of my free time We work to get paid. Carriers need to begin adding the standard free time into the rate.
The real kicker is when they dispatch a load and state it is suppose to be ready for p/u and at they same time show another p/u time on the load assignment as to avoid paying layover and or detention.
    Further wasting a drivers time.
As always at most carriers they have no morals, if you don't ask for it you wont get it.

And when they do give it to you it's only a tiny percentage of what they actually charge.

the thing is, most drevers do not realize how crooked this industry is, how much these loads pay, how much they are being screwed by their company

    Wow.

I usually don't like DC types but when she brought this up I almost wanted to stand up and applaud.
(I would have if I was in that hearing)

But from the way the article was written, it seemed like after the opening statement, it was never touched on again.

I guess maybe it hit a little to close to home as to what some of the REAL problems causing trucker fatigue are.

But yeah let's spend the rest of the day talking about 30 minute breaks and hour 10 vs hour 11.

BTW that 1am-5am provision in the restart rule? I'm still waiting to see how it will affect NYC traffic as the nearest truck stops are 2 hours out, so come Monday morning all the inbound trucks are in the height of rush hour.

    True...

I've been in contact with several brokers after some of the major detention incidents I've been caught up in,the company gets around $450 a day ( when it goes that long) and the driver ( me) just gets a sore butt from sitting all day.
These people are ruthless and unconcerned about anything but keeping their books balanced.
Washington simply cannot be trusted, their words are empty.Doubtful there will ever be a detention law on the books,it's cost too much.

Yall are extremly NAIVE if you think this is ever going to be fixed--washington can pass ALL the laws they want--and it wont change a thing--
This is a customer serviced based biz--and they(shippers/receivers) are the CUSTOMER--and there will ALWAYS be a company(S)willing to do whatever the cust needs or wants.......
It has ALWAYS been this way--the new HOS--since 04 are whats changed--and the larger shippers etc were ALL warned by many carriers that they would have to amend the way they did things due to the NEW regs the carriers were going to have to abide by...but it WAS all idle threats--since the offenders didnt change their ways and the carriers let it go......

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I get detention pay whether the customer pays or not.
But it does not reset my clock, it does not get me home on time and it doesn't get my next load which pays more than "detention pay".
I am tired of rushing to make an appointment time with enough time to load and leave, only to wait 10 or more hours because the shipper wants to have the trucks lined up for their loaders.
I'm not holding my breath. But until it costs shippers and receivers more to keep us waiting than to invest in resources that would make them more efficient, I guess we'll be stuck with it.
