I have my own IRP Plan/Registration and Operating Authority (which I use for my own company) and operate only one truck. I am planning on leasing onto another company to haul for them as an Owner Operator. I know I can keep my Authority/DOT & IRP Registration as I need to use the truck for my own use (not working for the company being leased onto).

Is it possible to have the truck operated by both authorities? Has anyone ever ran into this issue?

Thanks in advance! A lot of great info on this site.

The company you lease to will need to know, and if they agree it shouldn't be an issue. You'll need to cover the lettering of whichever authority your not using.

Thank you for the replies guys. After checking with my local (NC) IRP office, they say the truck can only be registered under one authority. One of the companies I was interested into leasing onto is only interested in leasing on O/O's. Another has a simple brokerage agreement (actually much simpler than the O/O agreement's I have been looking at). Since I already have the Authority in place I am thinking of going the independent/broker route. This is attractive to me because having the ability to operate the truck for my own companies usage at times is of paramount importance to me. The independent/broker route also seems attractive to me because I am looking for flexibility in my schedule. I am checking with my insurance provider on cargo insurance quotes and hope they aren't too high since the Authority is new (less than a year). The Authority is "Contract Carrier" so we only operated with the liability coverage up until now.

you can do trip leases and be legal, but can only run under your numbers or theirs not both at same time.

Thanks guys, great to hear real world input vs the desk jockeys answers. I found a broker willing to work with me operating under my own authority so I plan to try that option out.
