"When the lights go down in the city, in the city by the bay" ... there's only one city, there's only one bay and only one bay area.

Not personally, but I know a couple of people that graduated from A-1 truck driving school in Oakland...... They both went to DMV on their own to get their permit before they went to the school just an FYI.

AS a Prune picker from San Thomas ( http://california.hometownlocator.com/ca/santa-clara/san-tomas.cfm ) I understand this sentiment. However:

The Beach Boys were from the "South bay area" of LA. Surfers just call it bay area

I have heard Folks have referred to greater Boston area as "the Bay Area"

And your referenced song was originally written in and about LA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lights_(Journey_song)

The Tampa Bay area ... also known as "The Bay Area" by media and geographical references in the Southeast and along the east coast. Of course, in addition to the aforementioned we also have the Green Bay area.

I went to Area Truck Driving School in San Jose, near the San Jose Airport. They teach well enough that you will get your CDL in about two months, and they will stick by you and make sure you get it. They also seem to be connected to a few of the truck driving companies, so when I went there most of the people got jobs right out of school. The negative things are (when I went there) the trucks they used were city trucks which means the transmissions were fully synchronized, so shifting is just like shifting a four wheeler with a stick, they used short trailers (I think they were 40 feet). So when you get to the "real" world you got to learn to drive a 53 foot trailer and a normal 10 or 13 speed. I would liked to have driven a normal truck and spent more time parking a big trailer --- when I got to Werner the trainers were mostly interested in making money, so they did not like to spend much time letting me park the rig --- but I got plenty of freeway time which I really did not need. All in all Area truck driving school was a good experience for me, if I had it to do over again, I might choose them again because they did make passing the DMV tests very easy, but on the other hand if I found a school that spent more time teaching with a 53 foot trailer and a non syncro transmission I would probably go that route. On the other hand, I think most all the schools around here used a short trailer at the DMV.
