It must stink to be so narrow minded when it comes to hauling. The key is to get approved as an authorized carrier with landstar or the like and use their loadboards to stay busy with loads that pay all day long $1.75- $3.00 cpm. If you don't want to do partials, then thats the best. The full load rate all day long as a hotshot are attainable if you think outside the box. Our drivers "hotshot" average between $16k-$22k per month consistently. My point is to build the relationships that will broaden the spectrum as a hs o/o. Not rely on the small pool that everyone is trying to jump in. The dot is another area that can easily be worked out, simply, be legal when you run!! If a company has all their ducks in a row, then there shouldn't be any issues with dot. Most of the fines and tickets handed out to guys like us, are because of lack of knowledge of the fmcsa rules and reg's. People should take the time to find out what is expected of them and their o/o's who drive for them if they expect to make it in this industry. I've probably have said more than what should be said. Most o/o's who thrive already have these things figured out. I talk to people all of the time that walk up to me and ask, "do you have to run a logbook with that rig?" the answer is always a resounding "yes"!!!!!!! I run 48 states with a fleet of o/o's that work under my authority, and each one goes through the same training before i put my #'s on their rig. The lack of knowledge is the killer of the small guy trying to get a piece of the pie. I could run 100 hs rigs and keep each and every one of them full and busy 365 days a year. Each man must make his own mark when it comes to surviving and exceding their own expectations. Trust me, i never thought before i got into this side of trucking that i would hear this from my own lips, but the truth is, anyone can do it. We as hs's must grow beyond our own expectations..my heart is to inspire the guys out there who are struggling right now. I would love to see 10's of thousands of hs's out there taking over the market like a hurricane. If you dont have a vision for yourself, then it can be really hard to see when your eyes are closed. I would love to help anyone that may be interested in getting that vision.

Landstar allows small trailers pulled by pickups in their fleet?

It might of been this way along time ago...however acme is far from dominating the oil field business especially in Texas. United vision, Rig Runners, Elfs are just to name a few companys that thrive in the oil field related hotshots

Small? I am not sure what you're calling small but, I used to haul stuff for them through their load board & I could have signed a lease with them but I wanted to stay independent.

    I was running a Chevy 3500 with a 40' (35+5 dovetail) gooseneck taking up to 12,000 lb.
I used to haul mostly frame rails out of Laredo, TX for them. Light, easy, loads & I could pick up multiple sets, going to multiple locations sometimes.
I also hauled some poly tanks out of Monroe, La here locally occasionally for the Ranger division out of Fla somewhere.

Yes I meant small rig setup, not small capacity.

It is interesting that LS would allow a pickup or light duty in their fleet, I was told no several times when I had my trucks leased to them. I understand how you could do this as an authorized carrier and think there would be a lot of money to be made.

Still would like to hear more about it.

I believe with Landstar, you can haul off their boards, with your own authority, I do not believe they offer a lease to the smaller trucks.

And this could be true. Cause its been 8 years since we had our hotshot and I am going off the following statement.

I was picking up some of those frame rails in Laredo once & I asked the lady there if that was the best price she could do on those. She told me that if I would lease to them rather than running on my authority, she could give me a better rate. They pay OO's that are leased to them better than someone who is not leased to them.
I took it that she was letting me know I could lease on. Since I wasnt interested in leasing, we did not discuss it any further. I may have misunderstood her statements but it was my understanding from her that they would allow me to lease on.

In the end, I can not be certain & I could very easily be wrong, as its been a long time, we didnt discuss it in detail & nobody ever handed me a lease agreement with my name on it to sign.

    Hope I didnt mislead you.

Anything is possible. It was in 2004 that I last had any knowledge of them and they might have changed by now.
